Weekend wrap: Former Christian County three sport star Keith Tandy was taken in the 6th round of the NFL Draft Saturday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tandy was a two time first team All Big East player for West Virginia. Tandy finished his West Virginia career in January leading the Mountaineers to a 70-33 win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.
Christian County softball coach and former wrestling coach Jim Perrin was placed into the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame during ceremonies Saturday night in Lexington. Perrin has won four state softball titles and led the Colonel wrestling program to the 1988 state championship.
Christian County’s wrestling team had its season ending banquet Sunday. Some of the honorees were: Kory Polley and JJ Killebrew were chosen as Most Outstanding Wrestlers, Kevi Matlock was named Most Improved, Rookie of the year was Tre’ Sells and Caleb Austin won the 110% Award.
Hopkinsville High golfer Dayton Jones finished third at this weekend’s Golfweek Junior Tour stop at Hueston Woods Golf Club in Oxford, Ohio. Jones opened with a 77 on Saturday and rallied back with a 72 Sunday to finish at 151, four strokes behind the winner.
Hopkinsville High girls basketball player Christy Soldo has been selected to play for the Kentucky All Stars against Indiana in June. The games will be played June 8th at Freedom Hall and June 9th at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Soldo, who has committed to Murray State is joined on the All Star team by Western Kentucky signees Micah Jones of Green County, LeAsia Wright of Manual and Kendall Noble of Perry County Central.
NFL: The Tennessee Titans bring the Titans Caravan to Hopkinsville later today. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and offensive lineman Michael Roos are scheduled to join the Voice of the Titans Mike Keith and mascot T-Rac at O’Charley’s on Fort Campbell Boulevard beginning at 5:45.
The Tennessean reports the Titans have signed former Tennessee quarterback Nick Stephens. Stephens played at Division 2 Tarleton State in Texas after leaving UT. Stephens passed for 3,005 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Stephens played for the Vols in 2008 and 2009.
Former Western Kentucky running back Bobby Rainey and defensive back Derrius Brooks were not selected in the NFL Draft this weekend, however, they both have signed free agent contracts. The Bowling Green Daily News reports Rainey has signed with the Baltimore Ravens and Brooks inked with the Cincinnati Bengals.
NHL: The Nashville Predators trail the Phoenix Coyotes two games to none in their Western Conference semifinal series after falling 5-3 last night in Phoenix. Game three is Wednesday night in Nashville, with airtime at 8 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.
Minor League Baseball: The Nashville Sounds were rained out against the Iowa Cubs Sunday. The Sounds open a series with the Omaha Storm Chasers at 7:05 tonight at Greer Stadium.
The Bowling Green Hot Rods lost 5-2 at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday, with the finale of the series this evening.
