SPORTS UPDATE 4/30/12

Only one player west of Interstate 65 has been selected for the Kentucky Boys All Star basketball team that will meet Indiana’s best in early June. The Courier Journal reports Twin Lancaster of Logan County is the only player from western Kentucky selected to the roster. Kentucky will meet Indiana June 8th in Louisville’s Freedom Hall and June 9th at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

As WHOP Sports reported this morning, Hopkinsville High’s Christy Soldo has been selected for the Kentucky girls all star team.

The Courier Journal reports University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino will officially introduce Kareem Richardson as the Cards new assistant coach at an afternoon news conference. Richardson comes to Louisville from Xavier University and replaces Richard Pitino, who was recently named head coach at Florida International.

The Tennessee Titans have signed 15 undrafted free agents today, including offensive guard Chandler Burden of Kentucky and tight end Brandon Barden of Vanderbilt.  The Titans have also signed undrafted punter/kicker Will Baston of North Alabama.

Nashville Predators forward Mike Fisher is among three finalists for the NHL's Foundation Player Award.  The award is presented annually to the player who applies the core values of hockey to further enrich his community.  The winner will be announced during the 2012 NHL Awards to be held June 20th in Las Vegas.

Major League Baseball has 12 games, six in each league on the schedule for this Monday. Games include the Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia and Atlanta hosts Pittsburgh.

Three games highlight the NBA playoff schedule this evening: New York is at Miami where the Heat lead 1-0, Orlando at Indiana where the Magic lead 1-0 and Dallas is at Oklahoma City where the Thunder lead 1-0.

Two games in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs this evening have the New York Rangers hosting Washington leading the series 1-0 and Los Angeles at St. Louis with the Kings holding a 1-0 in the series.

High School Baseball: Christian County hosts Madisonville, Fort Campbell welcomes Hopkins Central, University Heights hosts Logan County, Russellville welcomes Trigg County, Caldwell County hosts Livingston Central, Lyon County entertains Crittenden County, Calloway County hosts Marshall County.

High School Softball: Hopkinsville travels to Trigg County, University Heights goes to Caldwell County, Logan County entertains Butler County, Russellville at Ohio County, Madisonville plays at Webster County, Hopkins Central hosts Union County, Calloway County at Graves County.

Weekend wrap:   Former Christian County three sport star Keith Tandy was taken in the 6th round of the NFL Draft Saturday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tandy was a two time first team All Big East player for West Virginia. Tandy finished his West Virginia career in January leading the Mountaineers to a 70-33 win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

Christian County softball coach and former wrestling coach Jim Perrin was placed into the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame during ceremonies Saturday night in Lexington. Perrin has won four state softball titles and led the Colonel wrestling program to the 1988 state championship.

Christian County’s wrestling team had its season ending banquet Sunday. Some of the honorees were: Kory Polley and JJ Killebrew were chosen as Most Outstanding Wrestlers, Kevi Matlock was named Most Improved, Rookie of the year was Tre’ Sells and Caleb Austin won the 110% Award.

Hopkinsville High golfer Dayton Jones finished third at this weekend’s Golfweek Junior Tour stop at Hueston Woods Golf Club in Oxford, Ohio. Jones opened with a 77 on Saturday and rallied back with a 72 Sunday to finish at 151, four strokes behind the winner.

Hopkinsville High girls basketball player Christy Soldo has been selected to play for the Kentucky All Stars against Indiana in June. The games will be played June 8th at Freedom Hall and June 9th at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Soldo, who has committed to Murray State is joined on the All Star team by Western Kentucky signees Micah Jones of Green County, LeAsia Wright of Manual and Kendall Noble of Perry County Central.

NFL:   The Tennessee Titans bring the Titans Caravan to Hopkinsville later today. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and offensive lineman Michael Roos are scheduled to join the Voice of the Titans Mike Keith and mascot T-Rac at O’Charley’s on Fort Campbell Boulevard beginning at 5:45.

The Tennessean reports the Titans have signed former Tennessee quarterback Nick Stephens. Stephens played at Division 2 Tarleton State in Texas after leaving UT. Stephens passed for 3,005 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Stephens played for the Vols in 2008 and 2009.

Former Western Kentucky running back Bobby Rainey and defensive back Derrius Brooks were not selected in the NFL Draft this weekend, however, they both have signed free agent contracts. The Bowling Green Daily News reports Rainey has signed with the Baltimore Ravens and Brooks inked with the Cincinnati Bengals.

NHL:   The Nashville Predators trail the Phoenix Coyotes two games to none in their Western Conference semifinal series after falling 5-3 last night in Phoenix. Game three is Wednesday night in Nashville, with airtime at 8 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Minor League Baseball:   The Nashville Sounds were rained out against the Iowa Cubs Sunday. The Sounds open a series with the Omaha Storm Chasers at 7:05 tonight at Greer Stadium.

The Bowling Green Hot Rods lost 5-2 at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday, with the finale of the series this evening.

 

 

 

 

 
FORMER CCHS FOOTBALLER DRAFTED BY BUCS 4/26/12

Former Christian County footballer player Keith Tandy has been drafted in the 6th round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccanners. Tandy, who played collegiately at West Virginia. Tandy had 58 tackles and three interceptions during his senior year for the Mountaineers. Tandy was an all Big East selection last season.

 

 
SPORTS UPDATE 4/27/12

College Basketball:   Kentucky Sports Radio reports on its website the Kentucky-Indiana series appears to be in jeopardy. Kentucky wants to play the game yearly on a neutral court, while Indiana prefers to play the game at on campus sites.

It appears neither side wishes to budge from its stance, despite the fact Kentucky’s John Calipari and Indiana’s Tom Crean are good friends. The teams split the two games played this season, with Indiana winning the regular season meeting, while Kentucky won in the NCAA tournament.

Former Kentucky basketball player Scott Padgett has joined the staff at Samford University as an assistant coach. Padgett began his coaching career apprenticing on John Calipari’s staff before serving as an assistant at Manhattan last season.

Western Kentucky freshman Vinny Zollo asked to be released from his scholarship last month, however his leaving could be a bit tricky.  The Bowling Green Daily News reports the school wants to make sure his departure doesn't effect the school's Academic Progress Rate. 

Zollo, who played in 35 games for the Hilltoppers this past season, has a grade point average of 2.6.  Zollo told CBSSports.com Wednesday the NCAA has said he can transfer and has talked with several schools.  Zollo also said he didn't think it was fair concerning the APR and doesn't understand why they are targeting him.

NHL:   As the Nashville Predators get ready to open their Western Conference semi final series at Phoenix this evening, captain Shea Weber has been nominated for the Norris Award, given annually to the NHL’s top defenseman.

Tonight’s opening game begins at 8 in Phoenix, with game two Sunday night at 7. Games 3 and 4 will be played in Nashville on Wednesday and Friday nights of next week.

College Baseball:   Murray State opens an Ohio Valley Conference series this afternoon against SIU-Edwardsville, with Austin Peay hosting Jacksonville State in the first of a three game set this evening at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Western Kentucky opens a three game Sun Belt series with Louisiana Monroe at Nick Denes Field this evening, with former Hopkinsville High pitcher Justin Hageman getting the start for the Hilltoppers.

Major League Baseball:   A full slate of games in both the American and National Leagues this evening. Games include: Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia, Houston at Cincinnati, Atlanta welcomes Pittsburgh and St. Louis begins a weekend set with Milwaukee.

Golf: LPGA Hall of Famer Se Ri Pak will be out of the game for an indefinite period after suffering a shoulder injury earlier this week. Pak slipped on a staircase Tuesday and was diagnosed with a slight tear in the labrum of her left shoulder.
