SPORTS UPDATE 4/19/13

College Football:   Could Kentucky have another quarterback coming into its fold? The Palm Beach Post reports Florida State signal caller Clint Trickett is transferring and Kentucky is one of the schools on his list, along with West Virginia and South Florida.

Trickett has completed his Bachelors degree and would be able to play right away. He would have two years of eligibility remaining. In a reserve role in the 2012 season, Trickett completed 22 of 34 passes for 272 yards and no touchdowns in eight games.

College Basketball: The University of Tennessee picked up its fifth basketball signee Thursday. GoVolsxtra.com reports 6-10 center Rawane Ndiaye will come to Knoxville this fall from Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. Ndiaye averaged 2.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 13 games last season, before missing three months with a foot injury.

Golf: University of Alabama true freshman Emma Talley has been named the Golfweek National and Southeastern Conference Player of the week following her win last Sunday at the Ping/Arizona State University Invitational in Tempe, Arizona.

It was the first career win for the Princeton native and for Alabama, their fifth team victory of the season. Talley has four top 10 individual finishes in eight events, along with two top five showings.

MLB:  The Cincinnati Reds continue their weekend series with the Miami Marlins this evening, with pre game coverage at 5:40 on News/Talk WHOP. Elsewhere this evening: St. Louis meets Philadelphia, Atlanta takes on Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs go against Milwaukee.

High School Baseball-Thursday games: Logan County got by Allen County Scottsville 4-2.

Today’s games: Because of inclement weather Thursday, the 2nd region All A championship game between University Heights and Webster County will be played today in Dawson Springs.

Other games have Hopkinsville travelling to Madisonville, Christian County entertains Greenwood, Caldwell County at Webster County, Trigg County is at Crittenden County, Logan County hosts Graves County, Russellville travels to Warren East, Dawson Springs hosts Livingston Central, Hopkins Central at Ohio County, Paducah Tilghman at Marshall County, Henderson County goes to Franklin Simpson,

High School Softball- Thursday’s games: Barren County defeated Logan County 6-2.

Today’s games: The 2nd region All A softball championship game will be played at 5:30 this afternoon at University Heights between Livingston Central and Lyon County with University Heights hosting Ballard Memorial following the game.

Other games have Russellville going to Allen County Scottsville, Logan County, Madisonville, Union County and Muhlenberg County play in the Greenwood Border Battle in Bowling Green, Dawson Springs welcomes Todd Central, Trigg County hosts Webster County, Caldwell County welcomes Murray, Livingston Central hosts Marshall County.

Christian County is the 7th ranked team in this week’s Kentucky High School Softball Coaches Association Top 25. Greenwood is 1st, Owensboro Catholic 5th, Reidland 9th, Bowling Green 15th, Livingston Central is 20th and Henderson County is 25th.

Henderson County is 8th in this week’s Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25. Woodford County is first this week.

College Basketball: Austin Peay picked up its second signee in as many days Thursday. Former Kenwood High player Demarius Smith is transferring to the Governor program after spending time at Vincennes University. Smith began his collegiate career at Lipscomb University.

College Football: Western Kentucky concludes its first spring practice under Coach Bobby Petrino tomorrow. The Hilltoppers will have its Red/White Spring game at 2 pm at Houchens/LT Smith Stadium.

Austin Peay will also conclude its first spring practice under Coach Kirby Cannon tomorrow with its Red/White scrimmage game. Game time is at 11 am in Governors Stadium.

College Baseball: Austin Peay opens a three game Ohio Valley Conference series hosting Belmont, Murray State steps out of the OVC in opening a three game series hosting Alabama A&M and Western Kentucky opens a three game Sun Belt road series at South Alabama.

Austin Peay announced Thursday that they will host Evansville in a doubleheader next Wednesday, April 24th beginning at 4 pm. The teams were to play in Evansville earlier this week, but the game was postponed after threats were made on Twitter about player and fan safety

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods won their ninth game in the last ten by defeating Great Lakes 6-0. The Hot Rods open a three game series in Dayton against the Dragons.

The Nashville Sounds were rained out for the second day in a row against the Iowa Cubs. The game will be made up as part of a twin bill June 21st in Des Moines. The two teams close out their series this evening.

NFL: The league has released its 2013 schedule and the Tennessee Titans will open on the road. The Titans will play at Pittsburgh against the Steelers for the second time since 2005 on September 8th. The Titans then have a second road game against Houston September 15th before hosting its home opener against San Diego September 22nd.

Other home games have the New York Jets September 29th, Kansas City October 6th, the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers October 20th, Jacksonville November 10th, Indianapolis in the only prime time game November 14th, Arizona December 15th and Houston December 29th.

The Titans will also travel to St. Louis to face former coach Jeff Fisher November 3rd. Tennessee begins pre season play hosting Washington August 8th at LP Field.

NHL: The Nashville Predators season is down to its last four games and the Predators are on the road this evening against Chicago. First puck drops at 7:30.

Golf: Brian Davis fired a six under 65 and has a one shot lead over Kevin Streelman and Charley Hoffman after the first round of the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, SC. Danville native Josh Teater is at level par 71, while Nashville native Brandt Snedeker has a two over 73 score.

The Champions Tour’s Greater Gwinnett Championship begins today in suburban Atlanta. Franklin’s Kenny Perry is in this week’s field.

 

 

 

 
SPORTS UPDATE 4/18/13

College Basketball: Though it will be some time before the schedule is announced, one game on Kentucky’s 2013-14 schedule will take place Sunday December 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The Wildcats will face Providence that day, with Kentucky Sports Radio reporting on its website tickets for the contest are now on sale.

MLB: The Cincinnati Reds open a four game weekend series with the Miami Marlins at Great American Ball Park this evening, with pre game coverage beginning at 5:40 on News/Talk WHOP.

Elsewhere: The Chicago Cubs have an afternoon game with the Texas Rangers, while St. Louis meets Philadelphia this evening and the Atlanta Braves go against Pittsburgh.

PGA Tour: First round play is underway at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, SC. Nashville native Brandt Snedeker—who had a top five finish at the Masters—and Danville native Josh Teater are in this week’s field.

The Champions Tour’s Greater Gwinnett Championship is gets underway tomorrow outside of Atlanta. Franklin’s Kenny Perry is in this week’s field.

High School Softball-Wednesday scores: Hopkinsville’s Lady Tigers got their first win and first district win of the season with a 13-3 win at Fort Campbell. Lyon County advanced to the 2nd region All A championship game with a 4-2 win over Dawson Springs.

Today’s games: Livingston Central meets Lyon County in the 2nd region All A championship game, Dawson Springs hosts Caldwell County, Logan County travels to Barren County, Trigg County hosts Todd Central, Madisonville goes to Hopkins Central, Webster County hosts Union County, Graves County at St. Mary, Paducah Tilghman hosts Lone Oak, Muhlenberg County welcomes Ohio County, Calloway County is at Carlisle County.

The Kentucky New Era reports former Hopkinsville High baseball player Jarod Perry has committed to play next season at the University of Evansville. Perry is a sophomore outfielder for Kaskaskia College in Illinois, where he is hitting .360 with 18 RBI and 12 stolen bases.

Perry will also play this summer for the Madisonville-Tradewater Pirates of the Ohio Valley League. Perry will join former Christian County players Cole Isom and Kyle Spencer at Evansville next year.

College Basketball: Austin Peay on Wednesday signed the nation’s third leading scorer in junior college basketball. Markee Mazyck is a 6-5 forward from Frederick Community College in Maryland who averaged 22.5 points per game last season. He will have two years of eligibility at Austin Peay.

Murray State also picked up a signee Wednesday, signing 6-7 forward Jonathan Fairell from Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, FL. Fairell averaged 17.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game last season and was a 66 percent shooter from the field. Fairell will have two years of eligibility.

The University of Tennessee also got a signee Wednesday. Guard Darius Thompson of Blackman High School became the fourth signee for Coach Cuonzo Martin’s recruiting class. Thompson averaged 16.4 points, 6.4 assists and 3.6 rebounds during his senior year.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports Kentucky basketball assistant Rod Strickland is about to leave to join Oliver Purnell’s staff at DePaul University. Strickland—a DePaul alum-- has been at Kentucky since John Calipari took the job in 2009. A UK spokesman could not confirm the report Wednesday.

SMART AMONG THREE RETURNING TO OKLAHOMA STATE HOOPS 4/17/13

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart, projected as an NBA lottery pick, will return to school for his sophomore season.  Markel Brown and Le'Bryan Nash also announced their intentions to return to Oklahoma State for the 2013-14 basketball season.

Smart  averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Cowboys this past  season. He was named both the Big 12 Conference's Player and Freshman of the  Year and  received  the Wayman Tisdale  Award  as the  national freshman of the year.

Nash  averaged  14.0 points and  4.1 rebounds as  a sophomore last season. The two-time  All-Big 12  selection has 44 double-figure scoring games in his two- year career.  Brown averaged 15.3 points and 4.4 rebounds as a junior last season. He became the  second player in OSU history to record 200 assists, 100 steals and 75 blocked shots in a career.

Hopkinsville native Tommy Wade is an assistant coach for the Cowboys, who are coached by Madisonville native Travis Ford.
