SPORTS UPDATE 3/21/13

College Basketball: The NCAA tournament is underway today with games including Louisville meeting North Carolina A&T and Oklahoma State and Oregon in the Midwest Region, while Ohio Valley Conference champion Belmont meets Arizona in the West Region. The transfer rumor mill at Kentucky has started. 24-7 Sports reported last night on Twitter that Kyle Wiltjer may transfer to Gonzaga. Wiltjer was voted as the SEC’s 6th man in the just completed season.

College Football: Kentucky had its second spring practice Wednesday, with coach Mark Stoops noting the practice was better than the one Monday. Stoops said the execution was better and ran at a much faster tempo. Stoops added the offense was more efficient than in the first workout, but stated both the offense and defense need a lot of reps. The Wildcats will put pads on for the first time on Friday.

High School Softball/Baseball: The Kentucky Softball Coaches Association pre season top 25 has Greenwood at number 1, Owensboro Catholic is 2nd, Christian County is 8th, Bowling Green is 10th, with Reidland 11th, Lone Oak 15th, Marshall County 16th and Livingston Central 19th.

The Kentucky Baseball Coaches Association pre season poll has Woodford County 1st, Henderson County 2nd, Muhlenberg County 17th, Union County 18th, Lone Oak 20th, Daviess County 22nd and Bowling Green is 24th.

MLB: Cactus League action this afternoon has Cincinnati meeting Oakland, while the Chicago Cubs will split their squad up today to meet the Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners.

Grapefruit League action includes the St. Louis Cardinals facing the NY Mets.

PGA Tour: Play is underway at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, with defending champion Tiger Woods among those in the star studded field. Woods has won the event seven times. Nashville native Brandt Snedeker is returning after sitting out the last five weeks due to a rib injury. Danville native Josh Teater is also in this week’s field.

High School Baseball-Wednesday’s scores: Christian County defeated Fort Campbell for the second straight day, taking an 11-0 win to improve to 2-0 in 8th district play.

Elsewhere: West Creek, TN edged University Heights 7-6.

Today’s games: University Heights welcomes Union County, Hopkinsville hosts Livingston Central, Caldwell County goes to Paducah Tilghman, Todd Central hosts Butler County, Logan County entertains Bowling Green, Madisonville goes to Muhlenberg County, Hopkins Central at Webster County, Lyon County at Christian Fellowship, Murray at Mayfield, Graves County at St. Mary and Henderson County at Owensboro Catholic.

High School Softball-Wednesday’s score: Todd Central run ruled Warren Central 18-4 in four innings.

Today’s games: University Heights hosts Livingston Central, Logan County hosts Barren County, Todd Central welcomes Russellville, Trigg County entertains Dawson Springs, Madisonville hosts Union County, Webster County hosts Henderson County, Hopkins Central at Crittenden County, Lyon County hosts Murray.

High School Tennis: University Heights and Christian County played Wednesday at Ruff Park, with the Lady Blazers winning 9-0 and the Blazers winning on a default.

College Basketball

The field is now set for the NCAA tournament following first round action last night in Dayton, Ohio. James Madison defeated LIU Brooklyn 68-55 to earn a first round date with top seed Indiana in the East Region Friday in Dayton.

LaSalle defeated Boise State 80-71 and will face Kansas State in the West Regional Friday afternoon in Kansas City,

Games today include top seed Louisville meeting North Carolina A&T in the Midwest Region in Lexington, with tip off from Rupp Arena at 5:50. Ohio Valley Conference winner Belmont meets Arizona in the West Region in Salt Lake City at 6:20 this evening and Oklahoma State meets Oregon in the Midwest Region this afternoon around 3:40 in San Jose, California.

One day after losing to Robert Morris in the NIT, Kentucky got some good news as Julius Randle Wednesday announced his plans to come to Lexington next season. Randle is considered by many to be the top power forward in the nation, with ESPN having him ranked as the third best player in the land.

There’s only one SEC team remaining in the NIT after Tennessee lost to Mercer 75-67. The Volunteers finish the season 20-13.

NFL: Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson tells the Tennessean he likes all of the Titans off season signings except for one. Johnson says he doesn’t completely understand why the team signed running back Shonn Greene to a three year, $10 million deal.

Johnson says he’s never been a fan of the two back system, but says he will make the best of the situation.

Meanwhile, Titans coach Mike Munchak says it’s time for quarterback Jake Locker to take charge. Munchak says there will be no quarterback competition between Locker and newly signed Ryan Fitzpatrick. Locker played five games his rookie season and was named the starter last year, before spending a portion of the season out with a shoulder injury.

Munchak says Fitzpatrick understands his role is to back up Locker, but at the same time will help push Locker to improve.

NHL: The Nashville Predators begin a four game home stand this evening, hosting the Calgary Flames. First puck drops just after 7 in Bridgestone Arena.

 
RANDLE CHOOSES KENTUCKY 3/20/13

Kentucky basketball has added another to its 2013 recruiting class today. Julius Randle chose the Wildcats over Kansas though Texas and Florida made late runs to acquire the 6-9 power forward’s services. Randle is the third ranked player in the 2013 class and the number one power forward in the nation according to ESPN. Randle joins an outstanding recruiting class which many experts believe is the top class in the nation.

College Basketball: Kentucky fans are already looking ahead to next year, and we’ll find out later today if Julius Randle will be a member of the Wildcats. Randle has narrowed his choices to UK and Kansas and will make his announcement early this afternoon.

Coach John Calipari’s final talk show of the season airs at 5 this afternoon, followed by Big Blue Weekly at 6 on Lite 98.7.

NCAA first round games continue in Dayton tonight with LIU Brooklyn meeting James Madison, followed by Boise State and LaSalle. Coverage of both games begins at 5:30 on News/Talk WHOP.

First round NIT games continue tonight including Tennessee entertaining Mercer.

President Obama unveiled his presidential NCAA tournament bracket Tuesday. Obama has Louisville, Indiana, Ohio State and Florida reaching the Final Four, with Louisville and Indiana to play in the title game, with the Hoosiers to win the championship.

The president also picked OVC champion Belmont to win its first round game against Arizona in the West Region on Thursday.

Golf: United States Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson has announced that he has reduced his captain's picks from four to three for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Watson declined an opportunity to select any assistant captains at today's announcement, but did state that he has been mulling over a list of some 10 names.

The 2014 Ryder Cup will be held in Scotland at Gleneagles Resort.

High School Baseball-Tuesday’s scores: Christian County took the early 8th district lead with a 12-1 5 inning win over Fort Campbell at Colonel Field. David Smith had three hits including a home run and Joey Deck struck out seven in four innings to get the win. Christian County is now 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in district play, while Fort Campbell is 0-5 and 0-1 in district play.

Elsewhere: Madisonville over Trigg County 9-5, Greenwood over Logan County 5-1, Marshall County over Livingston Central 14-4, Murray over Reidland 10-2.

Today’s games: Christian County and Fort Campbell conclude their series at Fort Campbell, University Heights at West Creek, TN.

High School Softball-Tuesday’s scores: University Heights nipped Caldwell County 6-5, Lone Oak defeated Christian County 17-7 in five innings, Livingston Central edged Union County 1-0, Henderson County over Owensboro 11-4.

Today’s game: Todd Central at Warren Central.

High School Archery: Trigg County won the first KHSAA State Archery Tournament Tuesday in Louisville. The Arrowcats edged Henderson County and Anderson County to take the title. Sophomore Sarah Shipley of Trigg County finished second in the girls individual competition. Jericho Vannoy of Hopkins Central won the boys individual competition.

College Basketball: One year after being the national champion, Kentucky saw its season end in the opening round of the NIT. The Wildcats lost at Robert Morris 59-57 as Mike McFadden hit two free throws with 8.7 seconds left to give the Colonials the win. Archie Goodwin led Kentucky with 18 points as the Wildcats concluded a disappointing season.

In the first round of the NCAA tournament in Dayton, North Carolina A&T defeated Liberty 73-72 to move to a Thursday date with Louisville in the Midwest Region in Lexington, while St. Mary’s downed Middle Tennessee 67-54 and will face Memphis in the Midwest Region Thursday in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

There’s two more first round games this evening as LIU Brooklyn meets James Madison and Boise State plays LaSalle, with coverage of those games at 5:30 on News/Talk WHOP.

College Football: Austin Peay introduced Kirby Cannon as the school’s 18th football coach Tuesday. Cannon comes to Austin Peay after spending the last three years as defensive backs coach for Central Michigan.  Cannon replaces Rick Christophel who resigned in January to become the tight ends coach for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

NFL: Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt was found not guilty Tuesday of DUI when trying to pass through a security gate at Fort Campbell last July. The verdict was rendered after a five hour trial in which Britt was also found not guilty of violating the implied consent law for failing to take a breathalyzer test. Britt wrote on the implied consent form he passed the field sobriety test as his reason for refusing the breathalyzer.

The incident was the 8th involving Britt since he was drafted by the Titans. The 24-year-old Britt is in the final year of his contract.

NHL: The Nashville Predators finished their five game road trip with a 4-3 loss at Columbus. The Predators host Calgary at Bridgestone Arena tomorrow night at 7.
