SPORTS HEADLINES 3/20/13

High School Baseball-Tuesday’s scores: Christian County took the early 8th district lead with a 12-1 5 inning win over Fort Campbell at Colonel Field. David Smith had three hits including a home run and Joey Deck struck out seven in four innings to get the win. Christian County is now 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in district play, while Fort Campbell is 0-5 and 0-1 in district play.

Elsewhere: Madisonville over Trigg County 9-5, Greenwood over Logan County 5-1, Marshall County over Livingston Central 14-4, Murray over Reidland 10-2.

Today’s games: Christian County and Fort Campbell conclude their series at Fort Campbell, University Heights at West Creek, TN.

High School Softball-Tuesday’s scores: University Heights nipped Caldwell County 6-5, Lone Oak defeated Christian County 17-7 in five innings, Livingston Central edged Union County 1-0, Henderson County over Owensboro 11-4.

Today’s game: Todd Central at Warren Central.

High School Archery: Trigg County won the first KHSAA State Archery Tournament Tuesday in Louisville. The Arrowcats edged Henderson County and Anderson County to take the title. Sophomore Sarah Shipley of Trigg County finished second in the girls individual competition. Jericho Vannoy of Hopkins Central won the boys individual competition.

College Basketball: One year after being the national champion, Kentucky saw its season end in the opening round of the NIT. The Wildcats lost at Robert Morris 59-57 as Mike McFadden hit two free throws with 8.7 seconds left to give the Colonials the win. Archie Goodwin led Kentucky with 18 points as the Wildcats concluded a disappointing season.

Kentucky coach John Calipari’s final call in show of the season airs at 5 this evening, with Big Blue Weekly at 6 on Lite 98.7.

In the first round of the NCAA tournament in Dayton, North Carolina A&T defeated Liberty 73-72 to move to a Thursday date with Louisville in the Midwest Region in Lexington, while St. Mary’s downed Middle Tennessee 67-54 and will face Memphis in the Midwest Region Thursday in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

There’s two more first round games this evening as LIU Brooklyn meets James Madison and Boise State plays LaSalle, with coverage of those games at 5:30 on News/Talk WHOP.

College Football: Austin Peay introduced Kirby Cannon as the school’s 18th football coach Tuesday. Cannon comes to Austin Peay after spending the last three years as defensive backs coach for Central Michigan.  Cannon replaces Rick Christophel who resigned in January to become the tight ends coach for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

NFL: Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt was found not guilty Tuesday of DUI when trying to pass through a security gate at Fort Campbell last July. The verdict was rendered after a five hour trial in which Britt was also found not guilty of violating the implied consent law for failing to take a breathalyzer test. Britt wrote on the implied consent form he passed the field sobriety test as his reason for refusing the breathalyzer.

The incident was the 8th involving Britt since he was drafted by the Titans. The 24-year-old Britt is in the final year of his contract.

NHL: The Nashville Predators finished their five game road trip with a 4-3 loss at Columbus. The Predators host Calgary at Bridgestone Arena tomorrow night at 7.

 

 

 

 

 
SPORTS UPDATE 3/19/13

College Basketball: The Kentucky Wildcats are calling on pride tonight as they open play in the NIT against Robert Morris. The Wildcats are a 4 ½ point favorite this evening. Tip off is set for 6:30, with pre game coverage at 5 on Lite 98.7.

Other NIT games tonight include Alabama taking on Northeastern.

The NCAA tournament begins with two first round games in Dayton, Ohio with North Carolina A&T going against Liberty and Middle Tennessee meets St. Mary’s. You can hear coverage of the games following High School Baseball on News/Talk WHOP.

NFL: The Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins will open the NFL's 2013 preseason slate in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 4 in Canton, Ohio. The Cowboys will make their fifth trip to Canton and first since 2010, a 16-7 win over Cincinnati. Miami is 0-3 in Canton, including a loss to the Chicago Bears in its last trip in 2005.

The game will be played a day after the newest Hall of Fame class is enshrined.  Larry Allen, Bill Parcells and Cris Carter will be inducted into the Hall of Fame along with Jonathan Ogden, Warren Sapp, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson.

Other games have  University Heights at Lyon County, Logan County hosts Greenwood, Russellville entertains Muhlenberg County, Caldwell County hosts Webster County.

Both teams lost to Arkansas, with the Colonials falling in Fayetteville 79-74 and the Wildcats falling 73-60 also in Fayetteville. Tip off at 6:30 this evening, with pre game coverage at 5 on Lite 98.7.

UK did learn Monday if they win this evening, they will host a second round game Sunday at 4 pm Hopkinsville time against either Providence or Charlotte, who play a first round game Wednesday night.

The field for the NCAA women’s tournament was announced last night. Louisville is a 5 seed in the Oklahoma City region and will host Middle Tennessee Sunday, with Purdue and Liberty in the other game in Louisville.

Tennessee is the two seed in the Oklahoma City region and will host Oral Roberts Saturday, with Creighton and Syracuse in the other first round game.

Kentucky is the two seed in the Bridgeport region and will face Navy Sunday, with Davidson and St. John’s the other first round game in Queens, NY.

UT Martin is the 16 seed in the Norfolk region and will face top seed Notre Dame Sunday in Iowa City, with Miami and Iowa the other first round game.

Notre Dame, Baylor, Stanford and Connecticut were given number one seeds, with Baylor receiving the overall number one seed.

Western Kentucky received an invitation to the WNIT and will host East Carolina in a first round game Thursday night. The winner faces either Auburn or Alabama Birmingham in the second round.

College Football: Austin Peay will introduce its new football coach during a 10 am news conference today at the Dunn Center. He is Kirby Cannon, who is coming to Clarksville from Central Michigan, where he has served as the defensive backs coach for the last three years. Prior to his time with CMU, he was the head coach at Missouri S&T for 11 seasons. Cannon inherits a team that was 2-9 last season and a last place finish in the OVC.

Kentucky opened spring practice Monday, with new coach Mark Stoops saying he is encouraged about this year’s team. Stoops said he thought his team had a good attitude, knew what to do offensively and defensively, but said execution was very, very sloppy. Kentucky has six starters returning on both offense and defense.

College Baseball:   Austin Peay plays at Indiana State today, with Murray State going to Evansville.

College Softball: Murray State opens a six day road trip today at 6th ranked Tennessee.

NFL: The Tennessee Titans have reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.  "USA Today" reports the 30-year-old will be brought in to compete with Jake Locker.  Fitzpatrick threw for 34-hundred yards with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions last season before being released by the Buffalo Bills. 

He replaces Matt Hasselbeck on the roster.  Hasselbeck was released Monday and is expected to sign with the Indianapolis Colts today. The 37-year-old is expected to sign a two-year, eight-million-dollar deal.  Hasselbeck was let go after failing to agree to a restructured contract.  Hasselbeck was due to make 5.5-million-dollars this year as a backup. 

NHL: The Nashville Predators conclude a five game road trip this evening at Columbus, with first puck dropping at 6 pm.

 
UK TO HOST 2ND ROUND NIT GAME 3/18/13

Kentucky Sports Radio reports on its website if Kentucky wins its first round NIT matchup at Robert Morris tomorrow night, the Wildcats would host a second round game Sunday at 4 pm Hopkinsville time.  Kentucky would get the winner of the Providence-Charlotte game that will be played Wednesday night.

You can hear tomorrow night's game with pre game coverage at 5 on Lite 98.7.  Tip off of the game is set for 6:30pm.

 
AUSTIN PEAY TO NAME NEW COACH TUESDAY 3/18/13
There's a good reason Austin Peay's spring football practices isn't beginning today as planned.

The Sports Network reports the Ohio Valley Conference program will introduce its new head football coach at a news conference on campus Tuesday.  APSU is expected to name Central
Michigan defensive backs coach Kirby Cannon as the new coach.

Cannon has spent the last three seasons at Central Michigan. Previously, he was the head coach at Missouri S&T for 11 seasons from 1999-2009, compiling a 46-86 record, and was named Great Lakes Football Conference Coach of the Year in 2008 after leading the Miners to their first conference title since 1983.

Cannon would inherit a team coming off a 2-9 record and a last-place finish in the OVC.
