College Basketball

Kentucky is number one again this week in both major college basketball polls. The Wildcats return to action Saturday at Indiana, with pre game coverage at 2:30 on Lite 98.7.

Kentucky’s Terrence Jones was named the SEC Player of the Week Monday. The sophomore from Portland, Oregon averaged 20 points in wins last week over St. John’s and North Carolina.

Murray State’s Isaiah Cannan was named as the OVC Player of the Week for the second straight week. Cannan averaged 19 and a half points in wins over Western Kentucky and Dayton last week.

Monday scores: Austin Peay had to go to overtime to procure its first win of the season, 86-82 over Arkansas State at the Dunn Center. The win snapped a school record nine game losing streak. Former UHA standout Tyshwan Edmondson had eight points in 28 minutes playing time.

Elsewhere: Western Kentucky’s Lady Toppers defeated Louisiana Tech 69-54.

Tonight’s games:   Austin Peay’s Lady Governors entertain Middle Tennessee at 7 in the Dunn Center.

College Football

Three members of Kentucky’s football team were named to the Associated Press All-SEC team Monday. Senior Danny Trevethan was named first team linebacker, junior Larry Warford was named second team offensive lineman and senior Winston Guy was named second team safety.

NHL

The Nashville Predators return to action this evening hosting the Phoenix Coyotes at Bridgestone Arena. First puck drops at 7 pm.

The National Hockey League has voted to realign into four conferences. The Tennessean reports the Nashville Predators will retain a number of longtime rivalries with less travel. The Predators will remain in the same conference with Columbus, St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit, who are currently in the Central division according to the NHL Board of Governors. Winnipeg, Dallas and Minnesota will also join the conference with Nashville.

Tickets are on sale for the Christian County High Athletics Hall of Fame luncheon and ceremony to be held Saturday beginning at 11:30 am at Christian County High school cafeteria. University Heights academy will honor its 1992 Sweet 16 championship basketball team this Saturday at halftime of its basketball game with Apollo. Weekend wrap

Basketball: Both Christian County and Hopkinsville played basketball games Saturday. The Tigers defeated Graves County 60-49 at the Marshall County Hoopfest. Freshman Jaqualis Matlock had 16 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for Hopkinsville.

Christian County edged North Hardin at the Campbellsville Classic 64-61 behind 19 points from CJ Cotton and 11 from Isaiah Pollard.

Heritage Christian Academy’s Lady Warriors finished third at the KCAA Tip Off Classic. The Lady Warriors won the consolation game 45-36 over Lexington Trinity, after losing to Bluegrass Christian 48-23.

Wrestling:   Rossview High won the Hopkinsville High Duals meet. Caldwell County finished third, Trigg County was fifth, with host Hopkinsville winless on the day.

Christian County participated in the Harpeth Invitational Saturday with Kory Polley winning at 145 pounds, while Kevi Matlock was third in the 138 division.

University Heights went to the Walton Verona Bearcat Brawl Saturday, with Chance Collins at 113, Wade Willen at 132 and Colton Hall at 160 all going 3-1 in matches, while Phillip Bradley won two matches for the Blazers.

Murray State improved to 9-0 on the season with a 75-58 win over Dayton at the CFSB Center Sunday. Isaiah Cannan led a trio of Racers in double figures with 21 points.

Western Kentucky defeated Bowling Green 60-53, behind freshman George Fant’s 13 points and seven rebounds.

Manhattan defeated St. Peter’s 68-42, with former Christian County standout Donovan Kates not playing in the game.

Women’s play saw number 10 Kentucky defeat number 11 Louisville 74-54, number eight Tennessee defeated number 22 Texas 73-57 and Vanderbilt defeated High Point 70-54.

Tonight’s games: Austin Peay will try to get its first win of the season in 10 tries against Arkansas State.

Women’s action has Western Kentucky taking on Louisiana Tech.

Number one Kentucky does not see the court again until action Saturday at Indiana. Coach John Calipari’s weekly call in show is at five this evening, followed by Sports Nightly at six on Lite 98.7.

College Football

Despite a strong finish following an 0-4 start, 7-5 Western Kentucky was not selected to play in a bowl game Sunday. Western Kentucky had its first winning football season since 2007.

Louisville will face NC State in the Belk Bowl December 27^th in Charlotte, the Music City Bowl will have Mississippi State and Wake Forest December 30^th in Nashville, with Vanderbilt facing Cincinnati December 31^st at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.

NFL

Chris Johnson rushed for 153 yards and two scores as the Tennessee Titans win their second straight game at Buffalo 23-17. The win moved the Titans into a tie with four other teams in contention for the final AFC wild card berth. The Titans host New Orleans next Sunday at noon at LP Field.

Monday Night Football has the Jacksonville Jaguars taking on the San Diego Chargers. Coverage of the game begins at 7 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Thursday’s scores

Boys: University Heights used a 15-6 run in the third quarter to knock off Union County 68-54. The Blazers had a trio in double figures led by Quadre White and Jake Hopper who each scored 14, with Dayshaun Brown adding 12. UHA improves to 2-0 on the season, while Union County goes to 1-1.

Elsewhere: Todd Central edged Edmonson County 52-51, Crittenden County defeated Dawson Springs 62-32, Warren Central defeated an Australian travel team 62-48, Glasgow slid by Greenwood 53-50.

Girls: Jamesha Mosley had a game high 16 points in leading Christian County to a 66-58 win over Warren Central. Two other Lady Colonels were in double figures, Desherrica Edwards scored 14 and Kimberly Hyde added 10.

Elsewhere: Henderson County defeated Evansville Memorial 61-55, Graves County over Fulton County 77-40.

Hopkinsville won boys and girls matches over Madisonville Thursday night. The Kentucky New Era reports the Lady Tigers won 142-95, while the Tigers edged the Maroons 118-117 to win the match 260-212.

High school football

The Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl begins today with three games at L-T Smith Stadium at Western Kentucky University.

The Class A game at 11 am has Mayfield against Hazard, Glasgow meets Covington Holy Cross in the 2-A game at 3 pm, with Trinity and Scott County meeting in the 6-A game at 7 this evening.

Fort Thomas Highlands senior quarterback Patrick Towles has been named Kentucky’s Gatorade football player of the year. The University of Kentucky commitment has thrown for over 36-hundred yards, 41 touchdowns and one interception this season. Highlands will play Franklin Simpson in the 4-A title game Saturday.

College Basketball

Kentucky set a school record in blocking 18 shots in defeating St. John’s 81-59 in the SEC-Big East challenge at Rupp Arena. Freshman Anthony Davis just missed a triple double, scoring 15 points, getting 15 rebounds and blocking 8 shots in the win. Terrence Jones led 7-0 Kentucky with 26 points. The number one Wildcats meet North Carolina tomorrow, with pre game coverage at 9:30 on Lite 98.7.

Murray State improved to 8-0 on the season with a 70-59 win at Western Kentucky. Great Alaska Shootout MVP Isaiah Cannan scored 18 points in leading the Racers. Jamal Crook led 2-6 Western Kentucky with 20 points. The Racers host Dayton Sunday at 1 at the CFSB Center.

Austin Peay received some good news yesterday. The Kentucky New Era reports former Heritage Christian standout John Fraley has been cleared to rejoin team workouts and practice on a limited basis. Fraley hit his head on the floor in the waning minutes of the Governors season opener at Middle Tennessee and has been sidelined since.

The Louisville Cardinals return to action tonight in the SEC-Big East challenge as Vanderbilt comes to the KFC Yum center this evening.

College Football

Texas A and M fired coach Mike Sherman Thursday, with a story in the Austin American Statesman indicating one coach they are targeting as Sherman’s replacement is Louisville’s Charlie Strong.

The Tennessean reports Vanderbilt coach James Franklin will stay in Nashville. Franklin’s name had been linked to several jobs, but a news conference is to be held today to announce Franklin will stay at Vandy. Franklin led the Commodores to a 6-6 mark in his first season and bowl eligibility.

NHL

Mike Fisher scored a goal late in the third period as Nashville won at Vancouver 6-5 Thursday night. The Preds return to the Bridgestone Arena tomorrow night to host Buffalo, a game you can hear at 7 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Minor League Baseball

Three sites have been chosen as potential new homes for the Nashville Sounds ballpark. The Tennessean reports the sites are the East Bank of the Cumberland River, a site north of the state capitol where Sulphur Dell once stood, or an area west of a railyard on Charlotte Avenue.  Nashville mayor Karl Dean says building a new stadium is more of a luxury in these economic times. The Sounds have played at Greer Stadium since 1978.

Christian County’s boys basketball team will open its season now on Saturday. Coach Tyler Smithart told WHOP Sports Wednesday the Colonels will face North Hardin in a tip off classic at Campbellsville High School at 3:30 Hopkinsville time Saturday afternoon.

One of the oldest rivalries in Kentucky renews tonight as Murray State puts its 7-0 mark on the line at Western Kentucky. It's the 149th meeting between the two schools. Tip off at Diddle Arena in Bowling Green is at 7 pm.

The Kentucky New Era reports this morning Austin Peay and former Heritage Christian standout John Fraley will under go “computerized testing” today to see if he can rejoin the team. Fraley hit his head on the basketball court in the waning minutes of the Governors season opening loss at Middle Tennessee, November 11^th.

Austin Peay head athletic trainer Joni Johnson is quoted as saying Fraley has gotten better and is currently day to day, but more will be known about Fraley’s return once he takes the tests. The Governors return to action Saturday at 21^st ranked Memphis.

College Football

This comes as no surprise as the Courier Journal reports the University of Kentucky was fined 50-thousand dollars by the Southeastern Conference for fans storming the field following the Wildcats 10-7 win against Tennessee last Saturday. It’s the fifth time since 2007 the school has been fined for fans storming the field at Commonwealth Stadium following victories.

NFL

Former Murray State All American wide receiver Marcus Harris has signed with the Detroit Lions practice squad. Harris originally signed with the Lions as a free agent and participated in pre season camp. The St. Louis native left Murray State last spring as the schools all time leader in receptions and yards and ranked 2^nd in touchdowns.

NHL

The Nashville Predators play their fifth and final game of their current road trip at Vancouver this evening. First puck drops at 9 pm.

Hopkinsville forced Logan County into numerous turnovers as the Tigers opened the season with a 78-72 win over the Cougars last night. Jordan Majors led a quartet of Tigers in double figure scoring with 18 points. Darius White pitched in 14, T-J Elam and Jaqualis Matlock each had 13. Logan County’s Torrion Graham led all scorers with 34. The Tigers are back in action Friday night hosting Webster County as part of a boy-girl doubleheader.

University Heights had three players in double figures in defeating Todd Central 80-45. The Blazers were led in scoring by Jake Hopper with 16, Quadre White added 15 and Lamontas “Boo” Johnson added 14. The Blazers host Union County Thursday night, with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 7:15 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Fort Campbell lost to Union County 61-54, Trigg County defeated Dawson Springs 99-28, Madisonville over Daviess County 66-59, Muhlenberg County defeated Russellville 87-58, Evansville Memorial defeated Henderson County 70-64, Marshall County over Ballard Memorial 77-44, Ohio County over Hopkins Central 88-47.

Hopkinsville won its season opener, defeating Webster County 70-50 behind 26 points from Christy Soldo, Ashlee Cole and Haley Cook each added 14 in the win. Hopkinsville hosts Murray in the first game of a boy-girl doubleheader Friday night.

Caldwell County over Lyon County 56-50, Warren Central defeated Logan County 47-36, Paducah Tilghman defeated Calloway County 69-57.

Heritage Christian Academy won both games over Lighthouse Christian. The Lady Warriors got 14 points from Grace Waldron in knocking off LCA 37-32. while Alex Walker had 17 points and Alex Little added 10 as the Warriors held off Lighthouse 48-46.

Trigg County is searching for a new athletics director. The Kentucky New Era reports Dennis Walls has resigned the position. Walls was hired three months ago. Trigg County principal Shannon Burcham told the New Era Walls stated in his letter the job was too time consuming for him. Trigg football coach Coby Lewis will serve as interim AD.

College Basketball

LSU escaped with a 59-58 win at Houston. Former Christian County standout Anthony Hickey had 2 points, 4 steals, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in 36 minutes.

Penn defeated Manhattan 75-72, with Donovan Kates scoring 3 points in 20 minutes of action.

Women’s basketball:   Number 11 Louisville defeated Murray State 105-62, Number 8 Tennessee defeated Middle Tennessee 82-43, Bowling Green over Western Kentucky 86-62.

Tonight’s games: Women’s action has number 22 Vanderbilt taking on Austin Peay.

When St. John’s comes to Kentucky tomorrow night, head coach Steve Lavin will not be on the bench due to ongoing recovery from prostate cancer surgery. However, the Lexington Herald Leader reports former Arizona coach Mike Dunlap—who took over the program on an interim basis when Lute Olson retired—will run the team. NHL

The Nashville Predators lost at Calgary 1-0 Tuesday night. The Predators wrap up their Canadian road trip Thursday night at Vancouver.
