Thursday’s High School basketball scores

Boys: University Heights routed Clarksville Northwest 92-72 in Blazer Gym. The Blazers had a quartet in double figure scoring led by Nick Allen with 19, Quadre White 14, Austin Byrum 12 and Darius Mumford had 11. Terrell Chambers led everyone in scoring with 28. UHA is now 6-6 on the season.

Hopkinsville played a pair of games at the Murray Bank Laker Classic, winning over Mayfield 69-46 behind 17 points from Trey Edwards. The Tigers defeated Fulton City 73-64 in the second game played Thursday.

Christian County lost to Pendleton County in their final game at the Ashland Invitational Tournament 71-45.  Trigg County lost to DeSales 60-47 in the opening round of the Beth Haven Holiday Classic.

Girls: Hopkinsville lost to Murray in the championship game of the Murray High Lady Tiger Classic 55-50. Murray avenged a 64-60 loss back on December 4th. Christy Soldo had a game high 20 points for the Lady Tigers, with Ashlee Cole adding 13. The 9-2 Lady Tigers play at Madisonville Tuesday night.

University Heights won a pair of games at the KCD Holiday Classic, defeating Sayre 50-36 and host Kentucky Country Day 76-40.

Today’s games

Boys: Hopkinsville plays Dresden, TN in the championship game at the Murray Bank Laker Classic.  Trigg County meets Portland Christian at the Beth Haven Holiday Classic.

Girls: University Heights meets Atherton at the KCD Holiday Classic.

College Basketball

Aided by five turnovers in the last 2:30 of the game, Eastern Kentucky rallied from a five point deficit to defeat Austin Peay 67-65 in Richmond. The Governors were led in scoring by former UHA standout Tyshwan Edmondson who tallied 18 points. Austin Peay is now 3-11 overall and 0-1 in OVC play. The Governors continue their swing through “Death Valley” at Morehead State tomorrow.

LSU rolled over Grambling 69-37, with Anthony Hickey scoring four points, getting four rebounds, four steals and five assists in 20 minutes.

Tennessee defeated The Citadel 86-55, Vanderbilt over Marquette 74-57 and Western Kentucky defeated Louisiana Monroe 76-71 in overtime.

Women’s scores: Austin Peay lost its OVC opener at Tennessee State 95-81, Western Kentucky lost to Louisiana Monroe 53-49 and Vanderbilt defeated Western Carolina 81-36.

Tonight’s games: 21st ranked Murray State is back in Ohio Valley Conference action at Eastern Illinois and former Christian County standout Donovan Kates and Manhattan take on Binghamton.

Murray State coach Steve Prohm has been honored by CollegeInsider.com with the mid season Hugh Durham Award honoree. The 21st ranked Racers are 13-0, one of the best starts in the 87 seasons of basketball. The Hugh Durham award is named after the first and only coach to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four for the first and only times in the school’s history(Florida State in 1972 and Georgia in 1983).

Third ranked Kentucky and fourth ranked Louisville meet tomorrow at Rupp Arena. Both teams have identical 12-1 records, with Kentucky’s only loss to Indiana and Louisville in its last game against Georgetown. Coverage of the game which tips at 11 am Hopkinsville time, airs at 9:30 on Lite 98.7.

College Football

Mississippi State and Wake Forest meet in the Franklin American Music City Bowl at LP Field in Nashville, with kickoff at 5:40 this afternoon.

Among Saturday’s bowl games is the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas as Utah goes against Georgia Tech, with coverage beginning at 1 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP. Also tomorrow, Vanderbilt meets Cincinnati in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports University of Tennessee freshman wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett is receiving the school’s blessing to transfer, but with limitations. A UT spokesman said Thursday Arnett wishes to be closer to his ailing father in Saginaw, Michigan. However, the school says he is not allowed to transfer to Michigan, Michigan State or any other big name program.

NHL

Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber will not play this evening when the Predators are in action at St. Louis. Weber is out with concussion symptoms after suffering an upper body hit against Dallas last week. Coach Barry Trotz told ESPN.com Thursday there is no timetable for Weber’s return. High School Basketball

The Hopkinsville Tigers got 17 points from Trey Edwards in routing Mayfield 69-46 in the opening game of the Murray Bank Laker Classic.  The Tigers play Fulton City in a second game at 6:30 this evening.

One game that failed to make our schedule this morning is UHA's Lady Blazers playing this evening against host Kentucky Country Day at the KCD Holiday Tournament.

ESPN.com reports Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber will not play against the St. Louis Blues tomorrow night.  Weber is suffering from concussion symptoms after a hard hit against the Dallas Stars last week.  Weber was feeling a bit better earlier this week, however, coach Barry Trotz says there is no timetable for Weber's return at this point.  You can hear tomorrow night's game at 7 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Wednesday’s High School Basketball scores

Boys: Woodford County routed Christian County 73-50 at the Ashland Invitational Tournament. James White was the only double figure scorer for the Colonels with 12 points. Christian County is now 3-7 on the season.

Elsewhere: At the First Southern National Bank Classic in Russellville—Russellville defeated Fern Creek 80-72, Muhlenberg County over Chicago Julian 76-62 and Logan County lost to Bullitt Central 68-59.

Todd Central lost a pair of games at the Webster County Holiday Classic to Greenwood 79-43 and to host Webster County 80-51. The host Trojans also defeated Lone Oak 66-41.

Madisonville defeated Starr’s Mill Georgia 49-39 at the Marlin Christmas Classic in Florida. Crittenden County defeated Dawson Springs 66-43 at the Rocket Christmas Classic, where Ballard Memorial won over Reidland 62-53.

Girls: Hopkinsville improved to 9-1 on the season with a 65-60 overtime win over Union City, TN at the Lady Tiger Classic in Murray. Christy Soldo led the Lady Tigers with 24 points.

Elsewhere: At the First Southern National Bank Classic in Russellville—Russellville defeated West Creek 58-47, Logan County lost to St. Mary 49-46. At the Webster County Holiday Classic—Todd Central lost to Webster County 57-49, with Webster County also winning over Livingston Central 63-43. Livingston Central also won over Hopkins Central 58-37.

College Basketball

Third ranked Kentucky improved to 12-1 on the season with an 86-64 win over Lamar. Michael Kidd Gilchrist led the Wildcats with 18 points and Terrence Jones returned after missing two games with a dislocated pinky finger. Jones had nine points and six rebounds in 27 minutes. Kentucky plays 4th ranked Louisville Saturday in Rupp Arena, with pre game coverage at 9:30 am on Lite 98.7.

Speaking of Louisville, the Cards lost their Big East opener to Georgetown 71-68. It was the first loss for the Cardinals who are now 12-1 on the season. Kyle Kuric led Louisville in scoring with 17 points.

Women’s games: Number six Kentucky was upset by Middle Tennessee 70-58 and eight ranked Tennessee routed Old Dominion 90-37.

Today’s games: LSU hosts Grambling, Tennessee welcomes The Citadel, Western Kentucky opens Sun Belt Conference action against Louisiana Monroe, Austin Peay plays at Eastern Kentucky.

Women’s games: Western Kentucky meets Louisiana Monroe, Austin Peay plays Tennessee State and Vanderbilt meets Western Carolina.

College Football

The Southeastern Conference announced its 2012 conference schedule Wednesday with new members Missouri—who will play in the SEC East and Texas A&M in the SEC West. Missouri will open conference play September 8th at Georgia, while Texas A&M hosts Florida.

Kentucky will play at Missouri October 27th, with this game replacing LSU on the schedule. Other UK SEC road games are at Florida September 22nd, Arkansas October 13th and Tennessee November 24th.

The Wildcats will host South Carolina September 29th, Mississippi State—for the second straight year—October 6th, Georgia October 20th and Vanderbilt November 3rd.

NFL

Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak says he is not interested in returning to his alma mater Penn State to be its coach. Munchak told the Tennessean Wednesday he has no plans to leave Tennessee. A report from a Pittsburgh newspaper earlier this week said a Penn State search panel had tabbed Munchak as its leading candidate to replace Joe Paterno. Munchak played at Penn State from 1978-81.

NHL

The Nashville Predators defeated the Minnesota Wild in a shootout 2-1 at Bridgestone Arena. The Predators are back in action Friday night at St. Louis, with coverage at 7 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

 
MUNCHAK NOT INTERESTED IN PENN STATE JOB 12.28.11

Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak tells the Tennessean he is not interested in return to his alma mater Penn State as head coach. Munchak says he is happy where he is and has no plans to leave Tennessee.  The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported Tuesday Munchak is one of two people a search panel has targeted for the job.  Munchak was named Titans coach in February replacing long time coach Jeff Fisher. Munchak had been on the Titans staff 14 seasons before being named head coach.  Penn State is searching for a replacement for long time coach Joe Paterno.

 

 
SPORTS UPDATE 12.28.11

The Southeastern Conference has released its 2012 football schedule with its newest members Missouri and Texas A&M.  Missouri will play in the SEC East, while Texas A&M will play in the SEC West.  Both teams open play September 8th with Missouri at Georgia, while Texas A&M hosts Florida.  Kentucky will play at Missouri October 27th, with other SEC road games having the Wildcats play at Florida September 22nd, at Arkansas October 13th and at Tennessee November 24th.

Kentucky's home SEC games will include South Carolina September 29th, Mississippi State October 6th, Georgia October 20th and Vanderbilt November 3rd.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported Tuesday Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak has been targeted by a search panel to become Joe Paterno's replacement as football coach at Penn State. Sources tell the newspaper Munchak and Green Bay Packers quarterback coach Tom Clements are the leading candidates.  Munchak--in his first season as Titans head coach--played for Penn State from 1978-81.

NFL.com reports the St. Louis Rams are expected to fire coach Steve Spagnuolo following Sunday's game with the San Francisco 49ers.  The Rams are reportedly going to go after former Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher. The Rams head into Sunday's season finale at 2-13. Spagnuolo has a year remaining on his contract.
