Boys 2^nd region All A Classic

University Heights kept its undefeated streak in first round regional play intact with a 54-38 win over Lyon County. The Blazers jumped out to a 21-2 lead after the first period and never looked back. Austin Byrum led the Blazers with 14, while Dashjon Brown added 10 points. UHA is now 9-7 on the season and moves to the semifinals Friday night.

The Blazers will face Trigg County who defeated Dawson Springs 92-52. Webster County defeated Caldwell County 81-35 and Livingston Central edged Crittenden County 53-51.

Elsewhere: Hopkinsville won its 10^th consecutive game 74-46 over Lone Oak, Christian County lost at Bowling Green 65-52, Heritage Christian Academy got a game winning shot from Nathan Workman in defeating Majesty 59-57.

Madisonville rolled over Union County 73-38, Logan County over Allen County Scottsville 65-50, Ohio County defeated Muhlenberg County 58-48, Daviess County over Henderson County 62-51, Paducah Tilghman over Madison, IL 58-52, Franklin Simpson over Greenwood 45-41, Warren Central nipped South Warren 47-45 and Warren East defeated Apollo 59-52 also in overtime.

College Basketball

Freshman Anthony Davis set the school record for blocks in a season and had a career high 27 points as 2^nd ranked Kentucky rolled over Arkansas 86-63. The Wildcats won their 10^th straight game and extended the nation’s longest home winning streak to 46 games. Alabama is next for Kentucky Saturday, with pre game coverage at 9:30 am on Lite 98.7.

Anthony Hickey, Jr. had a team high 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists as LSU defeated Auburn 65-58 in overtime. The Tigers improved to 12-6 on the season and 2-2 in the SEC.

Tonight’s games: 10^th ranked Murray State is at Morehead State in Ohio Valley Conference action, and in the SEC, Tennessee meets Georgia.

Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings is calling for Kentucky to have the same SEC scheduling standards as the rest of the teams in the league. According to a story in the Tennessean, Stallings is not bothered by having a one day rest break between a Thursday game at Alabama and a Saturday home game with Mississippi State, but wants to know why Kentucky is not playing a Thursday-Saturday swing for the second straight season. The Wildcats play four games against SEC opponents coming off Thursday games.

Former Western Kentucky basketball coach Ken McDonald says he disagrees with his firing, but wasn’t surprised. McDonald told the Bowling Green Daily News in a story Tuesday he would have done a ton of things differently and says it was a learning experience. McDonald also says he has reached out to a number of people concerning future employment. McDonald was fired January 6^th and replaced on an interim basis by assistant Ray Harper.

McDonald also issued a statement to the media via email saying he appreciated the opportunity to be WKU’s coach and says he will hold the school dear and adds he hopes the freshman class can stay together and says if they do, they can be a special group for WKU.

NHL

The Nashville Predators saw their five game winning streak end as the New York Rangers got a 3-0 shutout at Madison Square Garden. The Predators are back in action Thursday night at Columbus.

High School Basketball

Girls 2^nd region All A tournament scores: University Heights moved to the semifinals with a 53-45 win over Trigg County. The Lady Blazers had three players in double figures led by Dannika Prater with 18, Kiki Smith 12 and DeNayia Holmes with 11. Trigg County was led by Alyssa Maxey with 17 points. UHA has now won 12 of its last 13 games in improving to 15-1, while Trigg County has lost four of its last five games in falling to 9-8.

UHA will face Crittenden County in the second semi final game Thursday night at Dawson Springs. The Lady Rockets defeated Dawson Springs 57-44. Livingston Central defeated Lyon County 59-39 and Webster County over Caldwell County 66-27. Livingston Central meets Webster County in the first semi final game Thursday night at 6.

Austin Peay defeated Tennessee State 69-63. Four Governors were in double figures led by former Heritage Christian Academy standout John Fraley who had 16 points and former UHA standout Tyshwan Edmondson added 10. Austin Peay is now 6-13 overall and 3-3 in the OVC and riding a three game winning streak.

Louisville loses for the third time in its last four Big East games at Marquette 74-63. The Cardinals are now 14-5 overall and 2-4 in Big East play.

Women’s scores: Austin Peay lost to Eastern Kentucky 61-59 and Murray State defeated Jacksonville State 73-57.

Murray State’s men’s team is ranked 10^th in the newest ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, with the Associated Press poll ranking the Racers 12^th this week. Kentucky is ranked second in both polls behind Syracuse. Louisville is 21^st in the AP poll, 23^rd in the ESPN poll.

Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis was named the SEC freshman of the week Monday. Davis averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, two and a half steals and two assists in wins over Auburn and Tennessee. It’s the third time this season Davis has won the award.

College Football

The Courier Journal reports Kentucky’s third all time leading high school rusher—Anthony Wales of Louisville Central—has committed to play collegiately at the University of Louisville. Wales led Central to back to back Class 3-A state titles and rushed for 82-hundred and 13 yards during his high school career.

NFL

The Tennessee Titans announced the hiring of Brent Maxie as the team’s new secondary coach. Maxie has spent the last four seasons coaching the Dallas Cowboys secondary and has 14 years of NFL coaching experience. Maxie replaces Marcus Robertson who was not retained at the end of the 2011 season.

NHL

The Nashville Predators scored three times in the first period in defeating the New York Islanders 3-1. The Preds face the New York Rangers this evening at Madison Square Garden.

Murray State University's basketball team has reached number 10 in this week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.  The Racers are ranked 12th in the Associated Press poll.  Both polls still have Syracuse number one, followed by Kentucky in the second spot.  Louisville is ranked 23rd in the Associated Press poll and 21st in the ESPN poll.

The University of Tennessee is reportedly about to lose its sixth assistant coach. The website Tidesports.com reports Lance Thompson has told acquaintances he will join the University of Alabama staff replacing departed linebackers coach Sal Sunseri.

14^th ranked Murray State remains undefeated after a 66-55 win over Jacksonville State. Racer Dante Poole led all scorers with 21 points. The 17-0 start for Murray State is the best in school history, with the Racers also improving to 5-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference.   Tennessee Tech is next for Murray State tomorrow night at the CFSB Center.

Austin Peay got its first OVC win defeating Eastern Kentucky 80-65. Former Heritage Christian Academy standout John Fraley matched his career high with 25 points in the win for the Governors. Austin Peay is now 4-13 on the season and 1-3 in the OVC and hosts Jacksonville State Saturday night.

Mississippi State defeated Tennessee 62-58, North Texas routed Western Kentucky 84-67 and Manhattan defeated Iona 75-72—former Christian County star Donovan Kates did not score in the contest.

Women’s scores:   Seventh ranked Tennessee saw its 36 game SEC winning streak come to an end as 8^th ranked Kentucky upset the Lady Vols 61-60. Number 24 Vanderbilt defeated Auburn 66-58.

Second ranked Kentucky returns to SEC action tomorrow at Tennessee. Tip off from Knoxville at 11 am, with pre game coverage at 9:30 on Lite 98.7.

College Football

Western Kentucky running back Bobby Rainey has been selected to play in the East-West Shrine game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida January 21^st. Rainey rushed for a school record 16-hundred 95 yards in the 2011 season, leading the Hilltoppers to a 7-5 finish. Rainey finished his four years at Western as the school’s career leading rusher with 45-hundred 42 yards. Rainey is also a two time Sun Belt Conference offensive player of the year.

The Tennessean reports Tennessee State University’s Hale Stadium will get a one million dollar facelift to host home football games. The project calls for installation of a temporary sound system and digital scoreboard. The project will also bring in bleachers to increase seating from 12 to 16 thousand. The first game to be played at the refurbished stadium is set for September 15^th against Austin Peay. TSU has played at LP Field since 1999.

NHL

It took an extra frame, but the Nashville Predators got a 3-2 win over Colorado at Bridgestone Arena. David Legwand scored the game winner early in overtime. The Predators host Philadelphia Saturday night at 7 at Bridgestone Arena.

Three members of the Nashville Predators have been selected for the NHL All Star Game to be played January 28^th-29^th at Ottawa. Defensemen Ryan Suter and Shea Weber will play in the game, while rookie forward Craig Smith will take part in the NHL Skills Competition.
