High School Basketball

Girls: Hopkinsville wrapped up the top seed for the 8^th district tournament with a 55-37 win over Christian County. Christy Soldo led Hopkinsville with 27 points, including 15-18 from the free throw line. Haley Cook added 10 for the Lady Tigers. Christian County was led by Jamesha Mosley with 13, with Desherica Edwards adding 10. Hopkinsville is now 20-4 on the season and 5-0 in district play, while Christian County is 9-13 and wraps up district competition 3-3.

Elsewhere: Clarksville Academy defeated Heritage Christian Academy 44-30, Hopkins Central defeated Dawson Springs 52-48, St. Mary over Lyon County 58-52, Livingston Central over Graves County 46-35.

College Basketball

OVC scores: Ninth ranked Murray State improved to 22-0 with a 81-73 win over Southeast Missouri. Isaiah Cannan had 32 to lead the Racers, with former Christian County player Corey Wilford scoring 15 for Southeast Missouri.

Former Heritage Christian Academy standout John Fraley had 31 points and 17 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Austin Peay fell to Tennessee Tech 94-88.

Manhattan defeated Marist 73-51, with former Christian County standout Donovan Kates scoring eight points and grabbing three rebounds.

Women’s scores: 5^th ranked Kentucky defeated Ole Miss 82-41, South Carolina upset 8^th ranked Tennessee 64-60 and Vanderbilt defeated Auburn 66-61.

Top ranked Kentucky is back in action tomorrow at South Carolina, with pre game coverage at 3:30 on Lite 98.7.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports LSU forward Malcom White sent an apology letter to both Kentucky’s Anthony Davis and Coach John Calipari this week. White apologized for the takedown of Davis in last Saturday’s game which led to his ejection. White said in both letters he acted out of frustration and not malice. The letters also stated the flagrant foul did not reflect how LSU coach Trent Johnson runs his program.

NHL

The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Nashville Predators 4-1 Thursday night. The Predators are back at Bridgestone Arena tomorrow night hosting St. Louis, with coverage of the game at 7 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

College Football

Wednesday was the first day of the national signing period. Kentucky signed 21 players including Kentucky Mr. Football Patrick Towles of Fort Thomas Highlands.

Western Kentucky signed 13, including two surprises. Defensive lineman Tyrone Pearson from Louisville Seneca and Kentucky high school’s third all time leading rusher Anthony Wales from Louisville Central.

Murray State signed 16 players including Glasgow High running back Jalen Sublett.

Louisville signed 24 players including 10 from Florida, Austin Peay signed 12 players, Vanderbilt inked 21 prospects and Tennessee signed 21 players.

Minor League Baseball

Plans are continuing as the possibility of Ohio Valley League baseball comes to Hopkinsville this summer. Christian County Chamber of Commerce president Carter Hendricks says the group is waiting for the Christian County Board of Education to approve the use of either Christian County or Hopkinsville High’s baseball field to be used by the Hoptown Hoppers this summer.

The school board is expected to make a decision at its next meeting later this month. Hendricks was a guest of Todd Hamilton on Sports Weekly Wednesday night.

NHL

The Nashville Predators wrap up a short two game road trip in Philadelphia this evening against the Flyers. The Predators return home to play St. Louis Saturday night at 7, a game you can hear on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

College football's national signing day is underway and it's been a big day for Kentucky.  Kentucky Mr. Football Patrick Towles of Fort Thomas Highlands was the first to send in his papers.  The Courier Journal reports Kentucky also got a couple of unexpected signees, former Tennessee commitment Khalid Henderson--a linebacker from Austell, GA and running back Justin Taylor--a former Alabama commitments from North Atlanta.

Western Kentucky got a couple of surprise signees.  Kentucky high school football's third all time leading rusher, Anthony Wales of Louisville Central, chose WKU after verbally committing to the University of Louisville.  Wales rushed for 8,213 yards in his high school career and led Central to back to back Class 3A titles.  The Courier Journal reports following shoulder surgery, Louisville wanted Wales to greyshirt.  Wales is the 14th best all purpose back in the nation according to Rivals.com.

Also, Seneca High defensive tackle Tyrone Pearson, who had committed to both Louisville and Kentucky, signed with the Hilltoppers.  Pearson is the 5th ranked Kentucky prospect according to Rivals.com.

Boys: Hopkinsville improved to 21-2 with a 92-52 win over Caldwell County. Hopkinsville had four players in double figures led by freshman Jaqualis Matlock and Jordan Majors who each had 16 points, Keon Wheeler added 12 and Darius White had 11. Caldwell County had three players in double figures with freshman Elijah Sindelar leading the way with 18.

High School Wrestling

Christian County is the city champion after defeating both Hopkinsville and UHA in matches Tuesday at University Heights. Nine Colonel wrestlers went undefeated in the match, according to coach Robert Burnham.

College Basketball

Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots as the top ranked Wildcats rout Tennessee 69-44 at Rupp Arena, extending the nation’s longest home winning streak to 48 games. Kentucky improved to 22-1 and will play at South Carolina Saturday, with pre game coverage at 3:30 on Lite 98.7.

Elsewhere in the SEC: Arkansas downed number 25 Vanderbilt 82-74.

The planning committee concerning Rupp Arena recommended renovations to the facility in a report issued Tuesday. The two year project—which would cost 250-300 million dollars—would keep Rupp Arena’s official capacity around 23-thousand, and add luxury boxes, party suites, chair back seating, a modern eight sided scoreboard and LED ribbon boards. The renovations would begin in 2015.

College Football

Today is the first day of the national signing period, with area schools all expecting a number of signees today.   Kentucky has 24 verbal commitments, Louisville 23 and Western Kentucky has 12, with Vanderbilt having 22 and Tennessee 19.

The University of Tennessee lost a commitment Tuesday. GoVols247.com reports Covington Louisiana High School linebacker Otha Peters—who commited to the Vols last summer—has changed his mind and will sign with Arkansas.

NHL

The Nashville Predators lit the lamp four times in the third period in defeating the Minnesota Wild 5-4. Mike Fisher had two goals in the third, including the game winner with 20.8 seconds to play.

The Tennessean reports Predators general manager David Poile met with Ryan Suter’s agent Tuesday in Minneapolis and said negotiations are ongoing. During the NHL All Star game over the weekend, Suter had said it was likely he would not sign a contract extension before the February 27^th trade deadline. If the two sides do not strike a deal by July 1^st, Suter will become an unrestricted free agent.

High School Basketball

Girls: Christian County won its third game in a row defeating University Heights 59-45. The Lady Colonels were led in scoring by Jamesha Mosley with 17, Martessia Williams added 11. University Heights was led by Denayia Holmes with 14, Cache Richardson added 13. Both teams are now 3-2 in district play as Christian County improved to 9-11, while UHA fell to 17-3.

Elsewhere: Hopkinsville rolled over Warren Central 64-32, Bowling Green over Logan County 62-21, Livingston Central defeated Madisonville 54-36, Calloway County over Murray 61-46, Stewart County, TN over Trigg County 55-26.

Boys: Christian County won its second game in a row, defeating Hopkins Central 88-77, Trigg County edged Stewart County, TN 48-42, Henderson County over Madisonville 56-48.

Tebowmania is coming to Western Kentucky. Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow will speak at Graves County High School April 20th, with tickets to go on sale February 17^th.
