SPORTS HEADLINES 4/15/13

High School Baseball: The 2nd region All A tournament begins today with opening round games which include University Heights meeting Lyon County, Dawson Springs meets Crittenden County, Trigg County goes against Livingston Central and Caldwell County plays Webster County.

Other games have Fort Campbell at Sycamore, TN, Todd Central hosting Ohio County, Logan County welcomes Warren East, Russellville hosts Caverna, Madisonville at Hopkins Central, Henderson County hosts Union County, Muhlenberg County at Breckinridge County, Calloway County goes to Lone Oak.

College Baseball: Austin Peay committed a season high five errors in a 14-8 loss at Southeast Missouri. The Governors return to action Tuesday at Evansville.

Murray State lost in its series finale to Jacksonville State 10-7. The Breds are on the road Tuesday night at Memphis.

Western Kentucky got a walk off homerun in the 10th inning to defeat Troy 7-6. Former Hopkinsville High pitcher Justin Hageman picked up his first win of the season, going one inning in relief, walking one and getting one strikeout. WKU plays at Lipscomb Tuesday night.

College Softball: Despite hitting three home runs, Austin Peay lost its series finale with SIU Edwardsville Sunday 8-5. Murray State defeated UT Martin by the score of 3-2 to win its first ever series at Martin.

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods lost the series finale to the West Michigan Whitecaps 10-7 at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Hot Rods are off today before opening a series at Great Lakes Tuesday night.

The Nashville Sounds lost at the Omaha Stormchasers 11-2. The two teams close out their series this morning in Omaha.

NHL: The Nashville Predators were shutout by Detroit Sunday night 3-0. The Predators, who have now lost six games in a row, close out a four game home stand against Vancouver at 7 this evening in Bridgestone Arena.

 

 
SPORTS HEADLINES 4/13/13

High School Baseball-Friday’s scores: For the first time since the 2009 8th district championship game, Christian County defeated Hopkinsville in a baseball game. The streak spanned nine games as the Colonels got a 6-1 win over the Tigers. The two teams play this evening at Tiger Stadium at 6, with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 5:45 on News/Talk WHOP and online at whopam.com.

Other games Friday saw Union County defeat Caldwell County 8-1, Marshall County shut out Crittenden County 9-0, Lone Oak over Heath 7-3.

Today’s games: Russellville hosts Allen County Scottsville, Logan County meets Barren County and Grayson County, Todd Central meets Fulton County and McLean County, Trigg County meets Marshall County and Graves County at the Dinger Wood Bat Classic at Graves County where Crittenden County meets Grandview, MO and St. Mary.

Madisonville is at North Hardin, Union County hosts Evansville Mater Dei, Henderson County hosts Bowling Green and Muhlenberg County, Livingston Central hosts Fulton County who also plays Lyon County.

College Football: Kentucky wraps up its first spring practice under coach Mark Stoops with the Blue/White game later this afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium. Pre game coverage begins at 5:30 on Lite 98.7.

Kentucky got its second commitment for the 2014 season Friday. Four star wide receiver prospect Thaddeaus Snodgrass of Springfield, Ohio chose Kentucky over Louisville, West Virginia and South Carolina among others.

Austin Peay will have its second spring scrimmage this morning at Governors Stadium. Coach Kirby Cannon is looking to see improvement from his football team from last week’s first scrimmage.

College Basketball: For winning the national championship, Louisville coach Rick Pitino’s bank account will get a little heftier. The Lexington Herald Leader reported Friday Pitino will receive $425 thousand, which is 70 percent of the salary of Louisville president Dr. James Ramsey, who makes $600 thousand per year. Pitino became the first coach to win national championships with two different schools.

Sports Business Daily reported Friday the Southeastern Conference will hold a news conference this coming Tuesday in Atlanta to announce formation of its own television network. ESPN will partner in association with the SEC, with the network’s launch date set for August, 2014.

College Baseball: Austin Peay defeated Southeast Missouri 9-4 in Ohio Valley Conference action, with game two of the series in Cape Girardeau this afternoon.

Murray State opened a weekend OVC series with a 14-11 loss to Jacksonville State. Game two is this afternoon in Murray.

Western Kentucky fell in its Sun Belt weekend opener 11-3 to Troy, with the teams meeting again this afternoon in Bowling Green.

College Softball: Austin Peay hosts SIU Edwardsville in a OVC doubleheader this afternoon, while Murray State goes to UT Martin for a twin bill this afternoon.

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods took a pair of games from West Michigan Friday night, winning 4-3 and 3-2. The teams play again this evening at 7:05 at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The Nashville Sounds lost its series opener at Omaha 6-5. The Sounds and Stormchasers play game two this evening in Omaha.

Major League Baseball: The Cincinnati Reds opened a weekend series in Pittsburgh last night with a 6-5 loss to the Pirates. Elsewhere, St. Louis defeated Milwaukee 2-0, Washington shutout the Atlanta Braves 4-0 and the Chicago Cubs defeated San Francisco 4-3.

Today’s games have Atlanta hosting Washington, Chicago hosting San Francisco and St. Louis hosting Milwaukee this afternoon, while Cincinnati plays in Pittsburgh tonight.

NHL: The Nashville Predators lost their fifth straight game to the Dallas Stars 5-2. Nashville continues its four game home stand hosting Detroit Sunday night at 6:30 in Bridgestone Arena.

Golf: Jason Day fired a four-under 68 in round two of The Masters to sit alone at the top of the leaderboard at six under par.  Fred Couples and Marc Leishman are tied for second, one stroke back of Day. 

Nashville’s Brandt Snedeker is among a group at four under par. Tiger Woods had a pair of bogeys on the back nine for a one-under 71.  He is tied for seventh at three under. 

Defending champion Bubba Watson just made the cut at four-over for the tournament.  Fourteen-year-old Tianlang Guan was also plus-four and tied for 55th.  He is the youngest ever to make the cut on the PGA Tour.

 
SPORTS UPDATE 4/12/13

High School Basketball: After a year away from coaching, former Warren Central boys coach Tim Riley has landed a new gig in the Volunteer State.

The Bowling Green Daily News reported earlier this week Riley will be the new coach of the Springfield Yellow Jackets. Riley coached 14 seasons at Warren Central, amassing a 307-128 record and won 8 4th region titles. He led Warren Central to the 2004 Kentucky state championship. Riley inherits a Springfield program which went 4-20 this past season.

College Basketball: The Southeastern Conference you may remember dropped its annual challenge series with the Big East because of the uncertainty of that conference. It has since aligned itself with the Big 12.

The Palm Beach Post reports Kansas will travel to Florida next season. The Lexington Herald Leader reports it’s not yet known who Kentucky will play next season, though it’s been speculated Oklahoma State might be the Wildcats opponent.

Meanwhile, Kentucky has received its second commitment for 2014. Thaddeus Snodgrass announced his decision this morning on Kentucky Sports Radio’s daily talk show. Snodgrass from Springfield, Ohio, is a four star wide receiver prospect who chose UK over West Virginia, Louisville and South Carolina among others.

MLB: National League action this evening has Cincinnati opening a weekend series at Pittsburgh, St. Louis meets Milwaukee, Atlanta hosts Washington and Chicago has an afternoon game with San Francisco.

High School Baseball: Christian County and Hopkinsville play the first of a two game 8th district weekend series this evening at Colonel Field. First pitch is at 7, with the Heritage Bank pre game show on the air at 6:45 on News/Talk WHOP.

There’s been a time change for the Saturday game of the series to be played at Hopkinsville High’s Tiger Stadium. First pitch will take place at 6, with the Heritage Bank pre game show airing at 5:45 on News/Talk WHOP.

Other games today have Fort Campbell at Stewart County, TN, Caldwell County at Union County, Livingston Central hosts a doubleheader with Todd Central and Lyon County, Hopkins Central hosts Webster County, Trigg County plays Murray, Marshall County meets Crittenden County and Graves County hosts Grandview, MO in the Dinger Bats Wood Bat Classic.

High School Basketball: Madison Central’s Allen Feldhaus, Jr. has been named the Courier Journal Boys Coach of the Year. It’s the second straight year Feldhaus has won the award, matching his father, who won the award in 1982 and 1986 while he coached at Mason County. The younger Feldhaus led Madison Central to its first state title this season.

College Football: Multiple sources reported Thursday University of Nebraska running back Braylon Heard will transfer to Kentucky. Heard—currently a sophomore at Nebraska—visited Kentucky two weeks ago. Last year, Heard scored three touchdowns in a reduced role in the Huskers offense.

Kentucky has its Blue-White spring game tomorrow evening at Commonwealth Stadium, with coverage beginning at 5:30 on Lite 98.7.

College Basketball: There seems to be a question on whether Louisville’s Russ Smith will turn pro or return for his senior year. Earlier this week, Smith’s father said there was no reason for his son to return to Louisville, however, that tune was a little different Thursday.

Cardinals coach Rick Pitino told Louisville radio station WKRD in an interview there’s a “50-50” chance Smith returns next season. Pitino says Smith is confused right now about what he wants to do and didn’t want his dad saying he was turning pro.

Louisville women’s coach Jeff Walz tells the Courier Journal he has no plans to leave the Cardinals program. It’s been rumored that Walz was a possible candidate for the Ohio State job, but he put that to rest Thursday. Walz just completed his sixth year and led Louisville to its second national runner up.

The Courier Journal reports the Louisville men’s and women’s basketball teams will be the grand marshals of this year’s Kentucky Derby Pegasus Parade. The event will take place May 2nd in downtown Louisville.

College Baseball: Austin Peay opens a weekend Ohio Valley Conference series at Southeast Missouri, while Murray State hosts Jacksonville State. Western Kentucky opens a Sun Belt series hosting Troy this evening.

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods game with West Michigan was rained out Thursday night, with the two teams playing a doubleheader at 5:35 this evening at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The Nashville Sounds game with Oklahoma City was also rained out Thursday night. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader June 28th in Nashville. The Sounds open a eight game road trip this evening at Omaha.

NHL: The Nashville Predators are back on the ice this evening, hosting the Dallas Stars. First puck at Bridgestone Arena drops at 7 pm.

Meanwhile, three Predators players seasons are over. The Tennessean reports center Paul Gaustad and wing players Colin Wilson and Gabriel Bourque will under go season ending surgeries.  Wilson and Bourque will have shoulder stabilization surgeries according to general manager David Poile, while Gaustad will have a torn meniscus repaired in his knee.

NFL: Tennessee Titans wide receiver/kick returner Mark Mariani says he will return from surgery last year. Mariani suffered a compound fracture in his left leg in a pre season game against the Arizona Cardinals last August.

Mariani tells the Tennessean after sitting out the entire 2012 season, he’s more motivated than ever to return this season.

 
SPORTS UPDATE 4/11/13

High School Baseball/Softball: Hopkinsville athletic director Keith Kelley tells WHOP Sports today’s Hopkinsville/Christian County JV baseball game has been cancelled.

There’s also a change for Saturday’s game with Christian County at Tiger Stadium, as the game will now start at 6 pm, instead of 7 pm, with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 5:45 on News/Talk WHOP.

Hopkinsville’s softball game with Fort Campbell is also cancelled for today, with plans to make it up possibly on Saturday, however that has yet to be made official.

College Football:   Kentucky has one more practice before Saturday’s Blue-White game. Following Wednesday’s practice, Coach Mark Stoops told the media he wants to see good football on both sides of the ball Saturday. He also said he’s been impressed with the team’s great attitude and their effort. You can hear Saturday’s Blue-White game beginning at 5:30 on Lite 98.7.

College Basketball: Syracuse sophomore guard Michael Carter-Williams has decided to enter the 2013 NBA Draft. Carter-Williams started all 40 games for the Orange this season and averaged 11.9 points per contest. Syracuse lost to eventual runner-up Michigan in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Missouri point guard Phil Pressey has announced he will forego his senior season and enter the 2013 NBA Draft. Pressey, who's the Tigers' career leader in assists and steals, averaged 11.9 points and 7.0 assists per game this past season. 

Kansas State rewarded head coach Bruce Weber with a contract extension Wednesday.  The agreement adds one year to his current contract, which will now run through June 30, 2018. Weber guided Kansas State to a 27-8 record in his first season in Manhattan. The Wildcats captured a share of their first Big 12 conference title since 1977, but was upset by No.13 seed La Salle in their NCAA Tournament opener.

MLB: Eight games are on the schedule today, including an afternoon game between the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco.

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods are scheduled to open a series with West Michigan at 7:05 in Bowling Green Ballpark, while the Nashville Sounds close a series with Oklahoma City at 7:05 in Greer Stadium.
