SPORTS UPDATE 5/24/12

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports an attorney for University of Tennessee Lady Vols media relations director Debby Jennings was given less than four hours by athletics director Dave Hart to decide to retire or be fired for insubordination earlier this month.

Attorney David Burkhalter represents Jennings and said he sent a letter to Tennessee chancellor Jimmy Cheek earlier his month to resolve the issue amicably. Burkhalter advised Jennings she could sue the school for discrimination and retaliation over internal complaints of gender and age discrimination. Jennings was told May 15th to retire or be fired after 35 years of service with the Lady Vols athletics programs.

The New York Daily News reports the Steinbrenner family is considering selling the storied New York Yankees. Several baseball and financial sources say the family is considering selling after the record sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers recently. Yankees president Randy Levine is downplaying the rumors. The late George Steinbrenner bought the team from CBS for $8.8 million in 1973.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports St. Louis Cardinals placed first baseman Matt Carpenter on the 15 day disabled list Wednesday. Carpenter suffered a tear of his right oblique during the first inning of Tuesday night’s game with San Diego. Carpenter is the fifth player and third first baseman to go on the DL in the last seven days.

Baseball tonight includes St. Louis hosting Philadelphia and Atlanta wraps up a series at Cincinnati.

Miami and Indiana meet in game six of their NBA Eastern Conference semi final in Indianapolis, with the Heat leading the series 3-2.

 

 

 
SPORTS HEADLINES 5/24/12

High School Baseball

For the third time in as many years, Hopkinsville is the 8th district champion after defeating Christian County 7-3 at Colonel Field Wednesday night.

The Tigers scored four times in the bottom of the first, saw Christian County rally in the third with three runs and then put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Rashad Lewis led the Tigers with three hits in four at bats, while senior Hutton White fired a two hitter and struck out 10 in picking up the pitching win for the 17-14 Tigers.  Dixon Craft took the pitching loss for the Colonels whose lone hits came from David Smith and Jonathon Grabara. Christian County heads to the regional tournament 19-19.

The All District team was also announced following the game.

Christian County was represented by Clayton Baker, Logan Daniel, Logan Patterson and David Smith.

Fort Campbell was represented by Pedro Hernandez, Braxton Lewis and JD Swails

Hopkinsville placed Josh Denton, Rashad Lewis, Clayton Smithson and Gant Unfried on the team.

UHA was represented by Darian McCombs, Ryan P’ Pool and Jacob Stevens.

Elsewhere: Caldwell County won the 7th district championship with a 4-2 win over Madisonville and Henderson County shutout Union County 6-0 in the 6th district championship.

High School Softball

Christian County won its eighth straight 8th district title with a 7-0 win over University Heights. The Lady Colonels got home runs from winning pitcher Jasmine Matchen, Malena Whipple and Lauren Hobson in getting the win. UHA’s lone hit came from Meagan Gallup, while Makenzi Miles took the pitching loss. Christian County heads to the regional tournament next week 29-7, while UHA is 21-13.

The All District team was announced following the game.

Christian County was represented by Maggie Glass, Lauren Hobson, Jasmine Matchen and Malena Whipple.

Fort Campbell was represented by Allie Alfield, Jenna Ammerman and Brittany Gossett.

Hopkinsville was represented by Erin Ganley, Skyler Grant and Mallory Smithson.

UHA representatives were Makenzi Hamby, Chelsea Cansler, Sydney Davenport and Lexi O’ Daniel.

Today’s game: Madisonville meets Hopkins Central in the 7th district title game.

Pairings for the regional tournaments to be played next week will be drawn Friday afternoon at Webster County High School. Webster County will host the 2nd region softball tournament, while Henderson County hosts the 2nd region baseball tournament.

College Baseball:   The Kentucky Wildcats will meet Mississippi State today in the SEC tournament in Hoover, AL. Last night, the Bulldogs defeated top seed LSU 3-2.

Vanderbilt defeated South Carolina 3-2 and will meet Florida this evening.

Western Kentucky lost to Florida Atlantic 4-3 at the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Bowling Green. The Hilltoppers face South Alabama this evening.

Austin Peay faces Southeast Missouri in its first game of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament this evening in Jackson, TN. SEMO defeated Jacksonville State 4-1 Wednesday.

Louisville beat Pittsburgh 8-4 in its first game of the Big East tournament and will meet Connecticut this evening.

College Basketball:   Kentucky coach John Calipari outlined some of the upcoming basketball games this season and next Wednesday. The Courier Journal reports Baylor, who the Wildcats defeated in the NCAA tournament this past season, will come to Rupp Arena to replace Indiana on the schedule. The Wildcats in return will play Baylor in a men’s and women’s doubleheader in the 2013-14 season at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

Calipari also said the series with North Carolina will resume in the 2013-14 season and he is talking with Duke coach Mike Kzryzewski about a multi year, neutral site game to be played at the best facilities around the country. Calipari added the Wildcats are working on a game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the 2013-14 season.

College Football:   The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the Tennessee program has suspended tight end Cameron Clear indefinitely after his arrest Tuesday night. Clear was taken into custody by University of Tennessee police after he was arrested in front of Neyland Stadium using a stolen laptop which belonged to another athlete. Five student athletes were robbed of items over the weekend. Clear is out of jail on bond.

Minor League Baseball: The Nashville Sounds defeated the Las Vegas 51’s 5-3 last night, with the series finale tonight in Las Vegas.

The Bowling Green Hot Rods opened a three game set at Great Lakes with a 6-5 loss. Game two of the series is this evening.

Golf:   The Christian County Chamber of Commerce Braggin’ Rights golf tournaments have been played the last two days at the Links at Novadell.

The Tuesday winning team was the Links at Novadell team who fired a 53. Ray Cobb, Phil Bader, Mitchell Moore and Tyler Jones were on the winning team.

The Wednesday winning team was Music Central with a 50 score. Team members included Ben Higgins, Wayne Thomas Rick Scott and Mike Hester.

PGA Tour:  Kentuckian Steve Flesch is in the field for the Crowne Plaza Invitational which begins today at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, TX.

The 73rd Senior PGA Championship begins today at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, MI.  Franklin's Kenny Perry and Paducah native Russ Cochran are in the field.

 
SPORTS UPDATE #2 5/23/12

The Bowling Green Daily News reports Western Kentucky’s women’s basketball program has received a commitment for 2013. Lexington Dunbar junior guard Kierra Muhammad made her announcement today. Muhammad averaged 10.2 points per game for the Lady Bulldogs last season.

The Sun Belt Conference was to hold a teleconference today announcing UT-Arlington will become the 12th member of the conference. The Mavericks will join the Belt in the 2013-14 school year. They are currently a member of the Western Athletic Conference and will become the 10th school when they join the Sun Belt to play football. Currently the school is exploring bringing football back after it disbanded the sport in 1985.

 

 
SPORTS UPDATE 5/23/12

WHOP Sports has learned former Warren Central boys basketball coach Tim Riley interviewed Tuesday for the boys basketball head coaching vacancy at Christian County. Riley also recently interviewed for the Henderson County boys’ job, which former Christian County coach Tyler Smithhart recently accepted.

Riley was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Western Kentucky last season, but he was relieved of his duties when Michelle Clark-Heard was named as Mary Taylor Cowles’ replacement as head coach.

The Tennessean reports when the Southeastern Conference has its spring meeting next week in Destin, Florida, one topic of discussion will be forming its own television network as the Pac 12 and Big 10 have already done. If the network is launched, it would begin in 2014.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports six former University of Kentucky basketball players are among 60 who have been invited to the NBA’s annual pre draft combine June 7-8 in Chicago. Darius Miller, Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb, Anthony Davis, Marquis Teague and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist are among the invitees.

College Football:   The Southeastern Conference has released its conference schedule for the upcoming football season.

Kentucky has home dates with South Carolina September 29th, Mississippi State October 6th, Georgia October 20th, and Vanderbilt November 3rd.

Away games are as follows: Florida September 22nd, Arkansas October 13th, Missouri October 27th, and Tennessee November 24th.

NFL:   Former University of Kentucky linebacker Danny Trevathan came to terms on a contract with the Denver Broncos Tuesday. The sixth round draft pick received a four year deal worth 2.2 million dollars.

The Tennessee Titans have come to terms with two of its draft picks. Fifth round pick tight end Taylor Thompson and seventh round pick, defensive end Scott Solomon signed contracts Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed. The only draft pick who has not signed is first round selection Kendall Wright.

MLB: Action tonight includes St. Louis hosting San Diego, Cincinnati entertains Atlanta and Chicago at Houston.

NBA: Boston plays at Philadelphia in game 5 of the Eastern Conference final, with the series tied 2-2.

NHL: The New York Rangers host New Jersey in game 5 of the Eastern Conference final, with the series tied 2-2.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 
SPORTS HEADLINES 5/23/12

High School Baseball

8th district:   Hopkinsville and Christian County were the winners in the semifinals Tuesday night at Colonel Field.

The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning in cruising to a 5-0 win over Fort Campbell. Clayton Smithson allowed only three hits and struck out 11 in getting the win for the Tigers. Josh Denton had two hits to lead Hopkinsville. Pedro Hernandez took the loss for Fort Campbell who finishes the season 16-19. Hopkinsville improves to 16-14.

Another outstanding pitching performance by Christian County’s Logan Patterson took place in the nightcap in a 1-0 over University Heights. Patterson struck out 15 Blazers and allowed only three hits. Patterson also scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the 6th inning on a bunt single by Clayton Baker.

Christian County improved to 19-18 with the win, while UHA finishes the season 8-20.

Christian County and Hopkinsville will meet in the 8th district title game tonight at 7:30, with the Heritage Bank pregame show at 7:15 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Elsewhere: Crittenden County won the 5th district championship with a 7-3 win over Livingston Central.   7th district semifinals saw Caldwell County edge Hopkins Central 4-3 and Madisonville defeat Dawson Springs 6-4.   13th district play saw Logan County defeat Todd Central 10-4 and Russellville shut out Franklin Simpson 2-0.

Today’s games: Henderson County meets Union County in the 6th district final, Caldwell County goes against Madisonville in the 7th district final and Logan County meets Russellville in the 13th district final.

High School Softball

8th district:   Christian County defeated Fort Campbell 16-1 in 3 innings getting only five hits in the contest. However, three were home runs, two by Malena Whipple and the other long ball by Jasmine Matchen. Christian County improved to 27-7 on the season, while Fort Campbell finishes 0-8.

University Heights continued its impressive season with a 7-4 win over Hopkinsville. Makenzi Hamby got the pitching win for the Lady Blazers and had two hits and four RBI. Hopkinsville got two hits from Madison Duvall. UHA improved to 21-12 on the season, while Hopkinsville finishes 7-20.

Christian County and UHA meet for the 8th district title tonight at 5:30, with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 5:15 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Elsewhere: Livingston Central defeated Lyon County 10-0 in 6 innings in the 5th district title game. Henderson County is the 6th district winner after a 3-0 win over Union County. 7th district semifinal action saw Hopkins Central defeat Caldwell County 6-1 and Madisonville over Dawson Springs 9-0.

The Kentucky New Era reports University Heights has named Patricia Paschedag as its new girls soccer coach. Paschedag replaces Tony Kirves, who had coached the Lady Blazers for the last 10 seasons. Pasechedag, a native of Germany, has been involved in coaching travelling teams in the Clarksville area and played two years of collegiate soccer at Austin Peay.

Hopkinsville High Football will have a dedication ceremony for its block house next month. The block house will be named in honor of legendary coach Fleming Thornton June 15th at 4 pm.

College Baseball:   Kentucky opened play in the Southeastern Conference tournament with a 2-0 win over Ole Miss Tuesday. The Wildcats return to action Thursday against either LSU or Mississippi State who play today.

Vanderbilt defeated Georgia 4-1 and will meet 2nd seed South Carolina this evening at 7:30 in Hoover, AL.

The Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament begins today at Bowling Green Ballpark. 8th seed Western Kentucky meets top seed Florida Atlantic at 7 this evening.

The Ohio Valley Conference tournament begins today in Jackson, TN. Top seed Austin Peay plays its first game Thursday night.

Top seed Louisville begins play today in the Big East tournament in Clearwater, FLA against 8th seeded Pittsburgh.

College Football: The Courier Journal reports a former University of Kentucky football player was arrested late last week after allegedly assaulting a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy.

18-year-old Daylen Hall, who was dismissed from the UK team in February, is charged with third degree assault in connection with an incident which occurred after the state championship lacrosse game between his old high school, St. X and Trinity.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports University of Tennessee tight end Cameron Clear was arrested by University of Tennessee police on a felony theft charge Tuesday evening.

Clear was booked into the Knox County detention center on a charge of theft of more than $1,000. As of last night, he was still being held on a $2,500 bond.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports ex Kentucky basketball player Michael Porter’s recent arrest on sex charges was the result of a sting operation. Documents obtained by the newspaper say Porter had sexual contact with the underage girl in 2009 and 2010 when she was 14 and 15, some five months after he left the basketball program. The girl is now 17.

When arrested, Porter told investigators he had the relationship with the minor because of his addiction to pornography. Neither Porter nor his attorney responded to a request for comment.

Minor League Baseball:   Following an off day, the Bowling Green Hot Rods open a three game series at Great Lakes this evening.
