Hoppers Baseball: The first year Hoptown Hoppers are champions of the Ohio Valley League following a second straight 7-6 win over Fulton in the OVL championship game Monday night at Colonel Field.
The Hoppers struck early, thanks to a three run homerun by Phillip Menou in the bottom of the first inning. The Hoppers built their lead to 5-0 after three innings, then Fulton scored three times in the top of the 5th to pull to within 5-3. The Hoppers added single runs in the bottom of the 5th and 7th innings, while Fulton scored three times in the last two innings.
Fernando Tanaka, along with Menou led the Hopper hitting attack with two hits each. Former Christian County pitcher Kyle Spencer got the win in relief of starter Will Hammock, with Phillip Menou getting the savefor the Hoppers who finish the season 32-14, while Fulton finished 26-20.
A record crowd of 614 watched the contest, with that figure moving the Hoppers above the 7,500 mark for the season.
High School Golf: The regular season began yesterday with Christian County, Hopkinsville and University Heights playing in the Daviess County Invitational.
Daviess County won the event with 305, Hopkinsville had 315 and University Heights scored 330.
Christian County’s TJ Ferry was the individual winner with a 71, Grainger Greenwell of Christian County fired 90 and Logan Patterson had 101.
Jack Gardner led Hopkinsville with 73, followed by Dylan Henderson and TJ Janes each with 80, Jay Camp 82 and Wade Perry 90.
University Heights was led by Cameron Allen with 73, Austin Knight had 78, Tadd Switzer 79, Hendley Traughber 100 and Adam Stone with 108.
College Basketball: Kentucky coach John Calipari says he wants to work out a schedule where Kentucky, Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina and Kansas play home and home each season. Calipari tells ESPN’s Andy Katz the scheduling rotation would feature each team playing two home games and two road games against the group each season. Kentucky is playing only Louisville from the teams mentioned this coming season.
NFL: The Tennessee Titans are mourning the loss of wide receiver OJ Murdock who was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head in his car outside his former high school in Tampa, FL Monday morning. The 25-year-old Murdock was an undrafted free agent who missed all of last season with an Achillies tendon injury according to the Tennessean.
