SPORTS HEADLINES 8/2/12

College Football: The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the University of Georgia has contacted 19 Penn State football players about transferring. Thus far, six players have left Penn State’s program in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, including running back Silas Redd who announced Tuesday he is going to Southern California.

Auburn Undercover.com reports on its website former Dixie Heights quarterback Zeke Pike will not be with the Tigers as they began fall camp Wednesday.   Pike graduated high school early and participated in spring drills at Auburn, however he was arrested in June on a public intoxication charge and sent home.

Card Chronicle.com reports Trinity High School’s Ryan White has changed his college commitment. White had committed to Louisville in February, but now is headed for Vanderbilt. White is ranked by Scout.com as the 15th best cornerback in the nation. He is considered as one of the top five seniors in Kentucky.

Two internet sources indicate Kentucky has picked up another football commitment for 2013. 247 sports.com and Rivals.com report wide receiver Deangelo Yancey from Atlanta has committed to the Wildcats. Yancey, who caught 28 passes for 561 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior, is the 12th member of the 2013 recruiting class.

Florida State cornerback Greg Reid has been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules. Coach Jimbo Fisher did not provide details in a statement, however Reid was arrested last month for marijuana possession. Florida State opens its season against Murray State September 1st.

NHL: The Nashville Predators will place individual game tickets for the 2012-13 season on sale Saturday at 10 am at Bridgestone Arena. The Predators will also host an open house that includes the popular used equipment sale, locker room tours, an open skate on the ice at Bridgestone Arena and a pro shop sidewalk sale.

The Predators play their regular season home opener against the St. Louis Blues Saturday, October 13th.

MLB: A full slate of games includes a matinee game between the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tonight’s action has St. Louis at Colorado, Cincinnati hosts San Diego and Atlanta hosts Miami.

SPORTS HEADLINES 8/1/12

High School Basketball:   The Kentucky High School Athletics Association announced Tuesday the Boys Sweet 16 championship game will move to Sunday afternoon March 10th in 2013.

Commissioner Julian Tackett says the move is needed to avoid potential scheduling conflicts with a UK basketball game March 9th Rupp Arena. The semi final games will move from Saturday morning to Saturday evening. This will only be effective for next year according to the KHSAA news release.

College Football:   The University of Louisville is the overwhelming favorite to win the Big East Conference. The league released its pre season poll Tuesday.  Louisville won a share of the Big East title in coach Charlie Strong’s second season in 2011.

College Basketball:   Kentucky coach John Calipari tells ESPN’s Andy Katz there are two sure starters for the Wildcats this coming season. Calipari says heralded freshmen Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress will be starters, with sophomore Ryan Harrow, the transfer from North Carolina State coming off the bench.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports Louisville will get another player for the upcoming season. IMG Academy announced on Twitter Tuesday 6-10, 205 pound center Mangkok Mathiang has signed with the Cards. He was originally expected to be in the class of 2013, however reports say he will reclassify for the Class of 2012 and be eligible in the upcoming season.

Former Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl will become an analyst for ESPN in the upcoming season. Pearl was fired by Tennessee following the 2010-11 season because of a recruiting scandal.

Golf: Murray State University senior to be Patrick Newcomb has qualified for the US Amateur tournament to be played August 13-19 at Cherry Hills Golf Club outside of Denver.

Newcomb shot rounds of 68-70 for a six under par total in winning during a qualifier which concluded yesterday in Macon, GA. Newcomb won the Kentucky Amateur championship earlier this summer.

NFL: The Tennessee Titans signed their top draft pick, Kendall Wright of Baylor to a contract Tuesday. Wright ended his absence from training camp by signing a four year, $8.2 million dollar deal according to the Tennessean.

Meanwhile, Kenny Britt began a conditioning program Tuesday. However, when he will return to the field remains to be seen. Following arthoscopic surgery on both knees, Britt may face league discipline following his recent DUI arrest at Fort Campbell. Britt is currently on the physically unable to perform list.

 

 

 

 
SPORTS UPDATE 7/31/12

The Hoptown Hoppers ended the Ohio Valley League baseball season with a 7-6 win over Fulton last night. The Hoppers finished the season 32-14 in taking its first league title.

There’s a full slate of games in Major League Baseball this evening including the St. Louis Cardinals opening a series at Colorado, Cincinnati looks to start a new winning streak as they host San Diego, Atlanta meets Miami and Chicago takes on Pittsburgh.

The Bowling Green Daily News reported Monday that Western Kentucky has its 8th football commitment for the 2013 class. 5-11, 220 pound running back Dontravious Wilson of Buford, GA plans to play for the Hilltoppers next season. Wilson led the Buford High School Wolves to a runner up finish in Georgia’s Class AA playoffs last season.

Murray State’s football team will open fall camp Friday morning at 9 am. All practices are open to the public and fans are encouraged to come out and get a look at the 2012 Racers.   The Racers will hold their annual Meet the Racers day August 25th. Murray State opens the season September 1st at Florida State.

SPORTS HEADLINES 7/31/12

Hoppers Baseball:   The first year Hoptown Hoppers are champions of the Ohio Valley League following a second straight 7-6 win over Fulton in the OVL championship game Monday night at Colonel Field.

The Hoppers struck early, thanks to a three run homerun by Phillip Menou in the bottom of the first inning. The Hoppers built their lead to 5-0 after three innings, then Fulton scored three times in the top of the 5th to pull to within 5-3. The Hoppers added single runs in the bottom of the 5th and 7th innings, while Fulton scored three times in the last two innings.

Fernando Tanaka, along with Menou led the Hopper hitting attack with two hits each. Former Christian County pitcher Kyle Spencer got the win in relief of starter Will Hammock, with Phillip Menou getting the savefor the Hoppers who finish the season 32-14, while Fulton finished 26-20.

A record crowd of 614 watched the contest, with that figure moving the Hoppers above the 7,500 mark for the season.

High School Golf:   The regular season began yesterday with Christian County, Hopkinsville and University Heights playing in the Daviess County Invitational.

Daviess County won the event with 305, Hopkinsville had 315 and University Heights scored 330.

Christian County’s TJ Ferry was the individual winner with a 71, Grainger Greenwell of Christian County fired 90 and Logan Patterson had 101.

Jack Gardner led Hopkinsville with 73, followed by Dylan Henderson and TJ Janes each with 80, Jay Camp 82 and Wade Perry 90.

University Heights was led by Cameron Allen with 73, Austin Knight had 78, Tadd Switzer 79, Hendley Traughber 100 and Adam Stone with 108.

College Basketball: Kentucky coach John Calipari says he wants to work out a schedule where Kentucky, Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina and Kansas play home and home each season. Calipari tells ESPN’s Andy Katz the scheduling rotation would feature each team playing two home games and two road games against the group each season. Kentucky is playing only Louisville from the teams mentioned this coming season.

NFL:   The Tennessee Titans are mourning the loss of wide receiver OJ Murdock who was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head in his car outside his former high school in Tampa, FL Monday morning. The 25-year-old Murdock was an undrafted free agent who missed all of last season with an Achillies tendon injury according to the Tennessean.
