SPORTS UPDATE 4/22/13

College Basketball: The Idaho Statesman reports Boise State is trying to schedule a game next season against Kentucky. Coach Leon Rice says he is looking for “high level” games. The Broncos of the Mountain West Conference lost only one senior and return their top six scorers next season.

Kentucky Sports Radio reports there is also a UK connection at Boise State, as MarK Coyle who is the athletic director, was once the deputy AD at Kentucky.

College Football: The Atlantic Coast Conference has revealed the five-game schedule for each of the first three seasons of its agreement with Notre Dame football.

In 2014, the Irish will play at home against Louisville, North Carolina and Wake Forest with road games at Florida State and Syracuse. In 2015, Notre Dame makes trips to Clemson, Pittsburgh and Virginia while hosting Boston College and Georgia Tech. The 2016 season will feature home games against Duke, Miami and Virginia Tech with road tilts against NC State and Syracuse.

The partnership is part of Notre Dame’s transition into the conference, though football will remain independent.

MLB: The Cincinnati Reds open a three game series with the Chicago Cubs this evening at Great American Ballpark. Other National League games include St. Louis meeting Washington and Atlanta against Colorado.

NBA: Two more playoff tilts are on tap this evening. The Chicago Bulls will try to avenge a Game 1 playoff thrashing at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets in the opener, while the Los Angeles Clippers will try to take a 2-0 lead  in their Western Conference series against the Memphis Grizzlies at Staples Center.

High School Baseball:   University Heights and Hopkinsville play the first of a two game 8th district series this afternoon at Chris Simmons Field, with first pitch at 5:30.

Other games have Christian County at Calloway County, Fort Campbell hosts Sycamore, TN, Trigg County is at Livingston Central, Caldwell County welcomes Heath, Dawson Springs hosts Madisonville, Muhlenberg County hosts Hancock County, Marshall County hosts Lone Oak, Graves County welcomes Ballard Memorial, Webster County goes to Edmonson County.

High School Softball: University Heights at Caldwell County, Hopkinsville goes to Logan County, Todd Central at Butler County, Trigg County at Livingston Central, Dawson Springs at Webster County, Russellville hosts Edmonson County, Hopkins Central goes to Muhlenberg County, Calloway County welcomes Murray, Paducah Tilghman hosts Heath.

College Basketball:   Kentucky Wesleyan has named a new men’s basketball coach. Former Georgetown University coach Happy Osborne was named Sunday to replace Todd Lee. Osborne spent last season as head coach at Montgomery County High School, leading the Indians to a 33-5 record and a semi final appearance in the Boys Sweet 16. Osborne will be officially introduced at a news conference in Owensboro today.

College Football: Western Kentucky concluded its spring practice Saturday with the first Red/White game under Coach Bobby Petrino. Passing was the staple of the day as the White beat the Red 42-3. Former Fort Campbell standout Antonio Andrews was the leading rusher, with 83 yards in 14 carries.

Austin Peay concluded its first spring practice under new Coach Kirby Cannon Saturday. Cannon said while the Governors play was not perfect, the effort was good throughout the spring. Cannon feels the defense improved immensely through the spring and the offense made strides as well.

Murray State concluded spring practice with its Blue/Gold game. Coach Chris Hatcher said he was pleased with the spring sessions even though there were new players and coaches learning the ropes.

College Baseball: Austin Peay took two of three games from OVC rival Belmont with a 10-6 win Sunday. Murray State completed a series sweep of Alabama A&M with a 5-1 victory.

Western Kentucky fell in its Sun Belt series finale at South Alabama 7-5. Former Hopkinsville High player Justin Hageman came on as a defensive replacement in the game, recording a hit in one official at bat and walked twice.

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods overcame a four run deficit to defeat the Dayton Dragons Sunday 7-5. The Hot Rods return home to open a series with Fort Wayne this evening, with first pitch at 7:05 in Bowling Green Ballpark.

The Nashville Sounds lost to Omaha 8-3 Sunday, with game three of the series tonight at Greer Stadium.

High School Baseball-Friday scores: Madisonville defeated Hopkinsville 8-2, Russellville shut out Warren East 4-0, Ohio County edged Hopkins Central 5-4, Paducah Tilghman was a 4-3 winner over Marshall County, Apollo run ruled Union County 13-3 in 5 innings, Henderson County shut out Franklin Simpson 6-0.

Today’s games: The 2nd region All A championship game will be played at Riverside Park in Dawson Springs between University Heights and Webster County. Wet grounds forced postponement of the game for the second straight night Friday. First pitch is at 5:30.

Other games have Christian County travelling to Franklin Simpson, Fort Campbell hosts Fort Knox in a twin bill, Logan County hosts a doubleheader playing Butler County and Caverna, Todd Central meets Casey County, Caldwell County hosts Dawson Springs, Henderson County plays a doubleheader hosting Apollo and Madisonville, Marshall County welcomes Reidland and Calloway County for a doubleheader, Crittenden County hosts Livingston Central.

High School Softball-Friday scores: Livingston Central won the 2nd region All A tournament championship, defeating Lyon County 14-0 in 4 innings.

Elsewhere: University Heights defeated was a 4-1 winner over Ballard Memorial.

Today’s games: Christian County plays St. Mary, Crittenden County and Marshall County at the Marshall County Round Robin tournament, where Crittenden County takes on St. Mary and Marshall County.

University Heights is at Mayfield, Graves County hosts Massac County, IL.

High School Soccer: The Kentucky New Era reports Hopkinsville High junior Kelsey Humphries has verbally committed to continue her soccer career at Kentucky Wesleyan. Humphries has scored 88 goals in her prep career, including 44 for the Lady Tigers during her junior season. Humphries was named All District, All Region and honorable mention All State last season.

College Football: Western Kentucky, Austin Peay and Murray State are wrapping up spring practice today. The Governors have their first Red/White scrimmage game under new coach Kirby Cannon at 11 am this morning in Governors Stadium, while the Hilltoppers wrap up the first set of workouts under new coach Bobby Petrino with a Red/White game at 2 this afternoon at Houchens/LT Smith Stadium in Bowling Green.

Murray State wraps up its spring workouts with the Blue/Gold scrimmage at noon in Stewart Stadium.

The University of Louisville will play a football game at Notre Dame in the 2014 season. A date for the game has yet to be announced and will be announced at a later date. As part of the agreement to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, Notre Dame will play five ACC teams each year.  Notre Dame advanced to the BCS National Championship game last season before losing to Alabama, while Louisville defeated Florida in the Sugar Bowl. The meeting will be the first between the schools in football.

College Basketball: Austin Peay announced its third signee for the 2013-14 season in as many days Friday. 5-10 point guard Zavion Williams, who sat out this past season after transferring from Lipscomb, has been awarded a scholarship. Williams averaged 9.1 points and 2.6 assists during the 2010-11 season as a freshman at Lipscomb. Williams is a Clarksville native, having played prep basketball at West Creek High.

College Baseball: The Kentucky New Era reports former University Heights infielder Matt McGowan was to sign papers Friday to play baseball next season for Murray State. The 2011 UHA grad has spent the last two years playing for Olney Central College in Illinois and was a member of the 2012 Ohio Valley League champion Hoptown Hoppers. McGowan will play for the Hoppers again this season.

Friday night action saw Austin Peay drop the first of a three game Ohio Valley Conference series to Belmont 5-2. The teams play again today in Clarksville. Murray State opened a three game series defeating Alabama A&M 11-1, with game two this afternoon at Reagan Field in Murray.

Western Kentucky opened a weekend Sun Belt Conference series with a 10-8 win at South Alabama. The teams play again this evening in Mobile.

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods won for the 10th time in the last 11 games, opening a three game series with a 5-2 win at Dayton. Game two of the series is this evening.

The Nashville Sounds lost the series finale at the Iowa Cubs 2-0. The Sounds begin an eight game home stand hosting the Omaha Storm Chasers this evening at Greer Stadium.

Major League Baseball: The Miami Marlins evened the series with the Cincinnati Reds at a game apiece following a 2-1 win last night in Cincinnati. The two teams play again this afternoon, with pre game coverage beginning at 11:40 am on News/Talk WHOP.

Other National League action saw Philadelphia defeat St. Louis 8-2, Milwaukee edge the Chicago Cubs 5-4, and Pittsburgh shut out Atlanta 11-0. All three of those series continue with games this evening.

The Chicago Cubs claimed outfielder Julio Borbon off waivers from the Texas Rangers on Friday. Borbon had just one at-bat  this  season before  being designated for assignment on April 9. In 2012, Borbon spent the entire season at Triple-A Round Rock, posting a.304 batting average, 10 home runs, 56 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

Texas Rangers Opening Day starter Matt Harrison will undergo surgery next week to fix a herniated disc, and is expected to be out of commission until at least the end of the All-Star break. The Dallas Morning News revealed the news Friday, nine days after Harrison landed on the 15-day disabled list with a back issue. The left-hander was 0-2 with an 8.44 earned run average in two starts this season.

NHL: The Nashville Predators lost a 5-4 overtime decision to the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night. The Predators close out the home portion of the season Tuesday night hosting the Calgary Flames.

NFL: The Cincinnati Bengals signed linebacker James Harrison to a two-year contract on Friday. Harrison was released by Pittsburgh early in March after a 10-year run since joining the club as an undrafted free agent in 2002.

In 13 games last season, Harrison had 70 tackles with six sacks. Harrison has notched double-digit sack totals three times during his career, most recently in 2010. Harrison is also known as one of the hardest hitters in the league, which has led to numerous fines from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

PGA Tour: Steve LeBrun carded his second straight 3-under 68 on Friday to grab a share of the lead at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, SC before second-round play was suspended due to rain. LeBrun is joined atop the leaderboard by Kevin Streelman and Charley Hoffman, who both finished their second rounds with 1-under 70s to end 36 holes at 6-under-par 136.

Danville native Josh Teater shot his second straight 71 to stand at even par, with Nashville native Brandt Snedeker also firing a level par 71 to stand at 2 over for the tournament.

Seventeen players remained on the course when play was halted. They will finish up their second round at Harbor Town Golf Links this morning prior to the start of the third round.

Champions Tour: First round play was suspended due to rain Friday at the Greater Gwinnett Championship outside of Atlanta. Bart Bryant is the clubhouse leader at four under par 68 , with David Frost on the course at four under through 13 holes. Franklin’s Kenny Perry was on the course at 2 over par through 14 holes when play was halted for the day.

 
SPORTS UPDATE 4/19/13

College Football:   Could Kentucky have another quarterback coming into its fold? The Palm Beach Post reports Florida State signal caller Clint Trickett is transferring and Kentucky is one of the schools on his list, along with West Virginia and South Florida.

Trickett has completed his Bachelors degree and would be able to play right away. He would have two years of eligibility remaining. In a reserve role in the 2012 season, Trickett completed 22 of 34 passes for 272 yards and no touchdowns in eight games.

College Basketball: The University of Tennessee picked up its fifth basketball signee Thursday. GoVolsxtra.com reports 6-10 center Rawane Ndiaye will come to Knoxville this fall from Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. Ndiaye averaged 2.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 13 games last season, before missing three months with a foot injury.

Golf: University of Alabama true freshman Emma Talley has been named the Golfweek National and Southeastern Conference Player of the week following her win last Sunday at the Ping/Arizona State University Invitational in Tempe, Arizona.

It was the first career win for the Princeton native and for Alabama, their fifth team victory of the season. Talley has four top 10 individual finishes in eight events, along with two top five showings.

MLB:  The Cincinnati Reds continue their weekend series with the Miami Marlins this evening, with pre game coverage at 5:40 on News/Talk WHOP. Elsewhere this evening: St. Louis meets Philadelphia, Atlanta takes on Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs go against Milwaukee.

Other games have Hopkinsville travelling to Madisonville, Christian County entertains Greenwood, Caldwell County at Webster County, Trigg County is at Crittenden County, Logan County hosts Graves County, Russellville travels to Warren East, Dawson Springs hosts Livingston Central, Hopkins Central at Ohio County, Paducah Tilghman at Marshall County, Henderson County goes to Franklin Simpson,

Christian County is the 7th ranked team in this week’s Kentucky High School Softball Coaches Association Top 25. Greenwood is 1st, Owensboro Catholic 5th, Reidland 9th, Bowling Green 15th, Livingston Central is 20th and Henderson County is 25th.

Henderson County is 8th in this week’s Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25. Woodford County is first this week.

College Basketball: Austin Peay picked up its second signee in as many days Thursday. Former Kenwood High player Demarius Smith is transferring to the Governor program after spending time at Vincennes University. Smith began his collegiate career at Lipscomb University.

College Football: Western Kentucky concludes its first spring practice under Coach Bobby Petrino tomorrow. The Hilltoppers will have its Red/White Spring game at 2 pm at Houchens/LT Smith Stadium.

Austin Peay will also conclude its first spring practice under Coach Kirby Cannon tomorrow with its Red/White scrimmage game. Game time is at 11 am in Governors Stadium.

College Baseball: Austin Peay opens a three game Ohio Valley Conference series hosting Belmont, Murray State steps out of the OVC in opening a three game series hosting Alabama A&M and Western Kentucky opens a three game Sun Belt road series at South Alabama.

Austin Peay announced Thursday that they will host Evansville in a doubleheader next Wednesday, April 24th beginning at 4 pm. The teams were to play in Evansville earlier this week, but the game was postponed after threats were made on Twitter about player and fan safety

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods won their ninth game in the last ten by defeating Great Lakes 6-0. The Hot Rods open a three game series in Dayton against the Dragons.

The Nashville Sounds were rained out for the second day in a row against the Iowa Cubs. The game will be made up as part of a twin bill June 21st in Des Moines. The two teams close out their series this evening.

NFL: The league has released its 2013 schedule and the Tennessee Titans will open on the road. The Titans will play at Pittsburgh against the Steelers for the second time since 2005 on September 8th. The Titans then have a second road game against Houston September 15th before hosting its home opener against San Diego September 22nd.

Other home games have the New York Jets September 29th, Kansas City October 6th, the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers October 20th, Jacksonville November 10th, Indianapolis in the only prime time game November 14th, Arizona December 15th and Houston December 29th.

The Titans will also travel to St. Louis to face former coach Jeff Fisher November 3rd. Tennessee begins pre season play hosting Washington August 8th at LP Field.

NHL: The Nashville Predators season is down to its last four games and the Predators are on the road this evening against Chicago. First puck drops at 7:30.

Golf: Brian Davis fired a six under 65 and has a one shot lead over Kevin Streelman and Charley Hoffman after the first round of the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, SC. Danville native Josh Teater is at level par 71, while Nashville native Brandt Snedeker has a two over 73 score.

The Champions Tour’s Greater Gwinnett Championship begins today in suburban Atlanta. Franklin’s Kenny Perry is in this week’s field.
