High School Baseball-Friday scores: Madisonville defeated Hopkinsville 8-2, Russellville shut out Warren East 4-0, Ohio County edged Hopkins Central 5-4, Paducah Tilghman was a 4-3 winner over Marshall County, Apollo run ruled Union County 13-3 in 5 innings, Henderson County shut out Franklin Simpson 6-0.
Today’s games: The 2nd region All A championship game will be played at Riverside Park in Dawson Springs between University Heights and Webster County. Wet grounds forced postponement of the game for the second straight night Friday. First pitch is at 5:30.
Other games have Christian County travelling to Franklin Simpson, Fort Campbell hosts Fort Knox in a twin bill, Logan County hosts a doubleheader playing Butler County and Caverna, Todd Central meets Casey County, Caldwell County hosts Dawson Springs, Henderson County plays a doubleheader hosting Apollo and Madisonville, Marshall County welcomes Reidland and Calloway County for a doubleheader, Crittenden County hosts Livingston Central.
High School Softball-Friday scores: Livingston Central won the 2nd region All A tournament championship, defeating Lyon County 14-0 in 4 innings.
Elsewhere: University Heights defeated was a 4-1 winner over Ballard Memorial.
Today’s games: Christian County plays St. Mary, Crittenden County and Marshall County at the Marshall County Round Robin tournament, where Crittenden County takes on St. Mary and Marshall County.
University Heights is at Mayfield, Graves County hosts Massac County, IL.
High School Soccer: The Kentucky New Era reports Hopkinsville High junior Kelsey Humphries has verbally committed to continue her soccer career at Kentucky Wesleyan. Humphries has scored 88 goals in her prep career, including 44 for the Lady Tigers during her junior season. Humphries was named All District, All Region and honorable mention All State last season.
College Football: Western Kentucky, Austin Peay and Murray State are wrapping up spring practice today. The Governors have their first Red/White scrimmage game under new coach Kirby Cannon at 11 am this morning in Governors Stadium, while the Hilltoppers wrap up the first set of workouts under new coach Bobby Petrino with a Red/White game at 2 this afternoon at Houchens/LT Smith Stadium in Bowling Green.
Murray State wraps up its spring workouts with the Blue/Gold scrimmage at noon in Stewart Stadium.
The University of Louisville will play a football game at Notre Dame in the 2014 season. A date for the game has yet to be announced and will be announced at a later date. As part of the agreement to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, Notre Dame will play five ACC teams each year. Notre Dame advanced to the BCS National Championship game last season before losing to Alabama, while Louisville defeated Florida in the Sugar Bowl. The meeting will be the first between the schools in football.
College Basketball: Austin Peay announced its third signee for the 2013-14 season in as many days Friday. 5-10 point guard Zavion Williams, who sat out this past season after transferring from Lipscomb, has been awarded a scholarship. Williams averaged 9.1 points and 2.6 assists during the 2010-11 season as a freshman at Lipscomb. Williams is a Clarksville native, having played prep basketball at West Creek High.
College Baseball: The Kentucky New Era reports former University Heights infielder Matt McGowan was to sign papers Friday to play baseball next season for Murray State. The 2011 UHA grad has spent the last two years playing for Olney Central College in Illinois and was a member of the 2012 Ohio Valley League champion Hoptown Hoppers. McGowan will play for the Hoppers again this season.
Friday night action saw Austin Peay drop the first of a three game Ohio Valley Conference series to Belmont 5-2. The teams play again today in Clarksville. Murray State opened a three game series defeating Alabama A&M 11-1, with game two this afternoon at Reagan Field in Murray.
Western Kentucky opened a weekend Sun Belt Conference series with a 10-8 win at South Alabama. The teams play again this evening in Mobile.
Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods won for the 10th time in the last 11 games, opening a three game series with a 5-2 win at Dayton. Game two of the series is this evening.
The Nashville Sounds lost the series finale at the Iowa Cubs 2-0. The Sounds begin an eight game home stand hosting the Omaha Storm Chasers this evening at Greer Stadium.
Major League Baseball: The Miami Marlins evened the series with the Cincinnati Reds at a game apiece following a 2-1 win last night in Cincinnati. The two teams play again this afternoon, with pre game coverage beginning at 11:40 am on News/Talk WHOP.
Other National League action saw Philadelphia defeat St. Louis 8-2, Milwaukee edge the Chicago Cubs 5-4, and Pittsburgh shut out Atlanta 11-0. All three of those series continue with games this evening.
The Chicago Cubs claimed outfielder Julio Borbon off waivers from the Texas Rangers on Friday. Borbon had just one at-bat this season before being designated for assignment on April 9. In 2012, Borbon spent the entire season at Triple-A Round Rock, posting a.304 batting average, 10 home runs, 56 RBI and 20 stolen bases.
Texas Rangers Opening Day starter Matt Harrison will undergo surgery next week to fix a herniated disc, and is expected to be out of commission until at least the end of the All-Star break. The Dallas Morning News revealed the news Friday, nine days after Harrison landed on the 15-day disabled list with a back issue. The left-hander was 0-2 with an 8.44 earned run average in two starts this season.
NHL: The Nashville Predators lost a 5-4 overtime decision to the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night. The Predators close out the home portion of the season Tuesday night hosting the Calgary Flames.
NFL: The Cincinnati Bengals signed linebacker James Harrison to a two-year contract on Friday. Harrison was released by Pittsburgh early in March after a 10-year run since joining the club as an undrafted free agent in 2002.
In 13 games last season, Harrison had 70 tackles with six sacks. Harrison has notched double-digit sack totals three times during his career, most recently in 2010. Harrison is also known as one of the hardest hitters in the league, which has led to numerous fines from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
PGA Tour: Steve LeBrun carded his second straight 3-under 68 on Friday to grab a share of the lead at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, SC before second-round play was suspended due to rain. LeBrun is joined atop the leaderboard by Kevin Streelman and Charley Hoffman, who both finished their second rounds with 1-under 70s to end 36 holes at 6-under-par 136.
Danville native Josh Teater shot his second straight 71 to stand at even par, with Nashville native Brandt Snedeker also firing a level par 71 to stand at 2 over for the tournament.
Seventeen players remained on the course when play was halted. They will finish up their second round at Harbor Town Golf Links this morning prior to the start of the third round.
Champions Tour: First round play was suspended due to rain Friday at the Greater Gwinnett Championship outside of Atlanta. Bart Bryant is the clubhouse leader at four under par 68 , with David Frost on the course at four under through 13 holes. Franklin’s Kenny Perry was on the course at 2 over par through 14 holes when play was halted for the day. |
