Western Kentucky University is the newest member of Conference USA. The school's Board of Regents voted in favor of President Gary Ransdell's request to leave the Sun Belt Conference and join C-USA in July, 2014.
In making the announcement, Dr. Ransdell said the move to Conference USA provides WKU stability in its athletic program. WKU will join Sun Belt members Middle Tennessee, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and North Texas who are moving to C-USA later this year. Moving to Conference USA renews athletic rivalries with Charlotte and Alabama-Birmingham, who were both in the Sun Belt when WKU joined the league in 1982.
Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky was also on hand for today's announcement and said the league welcomes WKU. Banowsky says the university's tradition and athletic program is truly remarkable.
