High School Tennis: UHA Blazers and Lady Blazers played at Madisonville. The Blazers defeated Madisonville 9-0, and the Lady Blazers defeated Madisonville 8-1.
For the second time in as many years, Western Kentucky has won the Sun Belt Conference championship, defeating Florida International 65-63. George Fant had a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds to give the Hilltoppers a bid to the NCAA tournament. It also marked the second straight year WKU won four games in four days to make the NCAA field. WKU is now 20-15 on the season.
Former Christian County standout Donovan Kates scored five points and had five rebounds as Manhattan lost to Iona 60-57 in the championship game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament. The Jaspers finished 14-18 on the season.
Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel is scheduled to have surgery today to repair the torn ACL in his left knee suffered in the Wildcats game at Florida February 12th. Noel said in a news release he waited to have the surgery until now while UK was on spring break so he would not miss much class time.
Coach John Calipari said Monday on the Dan Patrick radio show that Noel will need a couple of months of rehab before deciding whether to leave UK for the NBA or return for at least one more season. Recovery time is 6-8 months.
Three Louisville Cardinals received post season honors from the Big East Conference Monday. Russ Smith and Gorugi Dieng were named All Big East first team, while guard Peyton Siva was named to the third team. Louisville placed two players on the All Big East first team for the first time in school history. The Cardinals begin play Thursday in the Big East tournament in New York.
