High School Basketball: The Boys Sweet 16 is underway today in Lexington’s Rupp Arena, with the 2nd region champion Hopkinsville Tigers set to play this evening against 8th region winner South Oldham. The game tips at approximately 7 Hopkinsville time following the opening game of the evening session which has 1st region winner Graves County meeting 3rd region champion Ohio County. Coverage of both games airs beginning at 5:15 this afternoon on Newstalk WHOP. The field for next week’s Girls Sweet 16 will be determined after two games this evening. The 8th region title game has Anderson County meeting Simon Kenton, with the winner to face 2nd region winner Henderson County next Wednesday night. The 10th region championship game has Montgomery County meeting Campbell County. College Basketball: Reports indicate University of Louisville junior post player Gorugi Dieng will participate in Senior Day activities when the Cardinals play Notre Dame Saturday at the KFC-Yum Center. It most likely means Dieng will forego his senior year and head to the NBA. The OVC tournament is beginning today in Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium. Murray State’s women are meeting Eastern Kentucky this afternoon, with two first round men’s games this evening featuring UT Martin against Morehead State and Southeast Missouri playing Eastern Illinois. MLB: Cactus League games have Cincinnati facing the Canadian National team and the Chicago Cubs against the Texas Rangers. Grapefruit League games include St. Louis against Miami. Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer is replacing the injured Mark Teixeira on the U.S. team for the World Baseball Classic. The Yankees slugger suffered a strained right wrist while taking batting practice before Tuesday's exhibition game against the White Sox. Teixeira is expected to miss a couple weeks. Hosmer is batting .391 this spring with nine hits in 23 at-bats over nine games. Team USA plays an exhibition tonight against Colorado, with its first World Baseball Classic game Friday night against Mexico.
