High School Basketball-Monday’s scores

Girls 2^nd region at Caldwell County: University Heights used a 23-9 run in the 3^rd quarter to defeat Webster County 60-44 to avenge a loss in the 2^nd region All A final earlier this season.

Four Lady Blazers were in double figures, led by Dennayia Holmes with 16, Demetria Snorton added 13 and LeLe Grubbs and Meg Starling each added 12 for UHA, now 24-7 on the season. Darrian McNary was the only double figure scorer for Webster County with 20. The Lady Trojans finish the season 23-6.

The other semi final game saw Henderson County break open a tight game at half and defeat Madisonville 62-41.

Tonight’s championship game between University Heights and Henderson County tips off at 7, with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 6:45 on Newstalk WHOP and online at whopam.com.

Elsewhere last night: 1^st region semifinal action saw Murray beat Graves County 60-48 and Marshall County over Paducah Tilghman 64-47. 4^th region semis saw Allen County Scottsville nip Todd Central 43-37 and Bowling Green over Russell County 75-50.

Owensboro Catholic punched its ticket to the Girls Sweet 16 next week with a 58-51 win over Meade County in the 3^rd region final. Also earning state tournament berths were Notre Dame of the 9^th region, Corbin in the 13^th region and Shelby Valley in region 15.

Other finals tonight have Murray and Marshall County in the 1^st region and Allen County Scottsville and Bowling Green in the 4^th region.

The 2^nd region Coaches Association announced its Girls All Region team last night. Players included Dennayia Holmes and LeLe Grubbs of University Heights, Haley Cook of Hopkinsville, Jamesha Mosley and Dannika Prater of Christian County and Alli Tellez of Fort Campbell.

Henderson County’s Ellie Fruit was named player of the year and Webster County coach Parker McCallister was named coach of the year.

The Hopkinsville Tigers head to Lexington today for their opening game in the Boys Sweet 16 tomorrow night against 8^th region winner South Oldham. Tip off for the game is set for around 7 pm. 1^st region winner Graves County plays 3^rd region winner Ohio County at 5:30, with coverage of both games at 5:15 on Newstalk WHOP.

College Basketball

Rick Pitino got his 300^th win as Louisville coach as the Cardinals rolled to a 67-51 victory over Cincinnati. Russ Smith led the Cards in scoring with 18 points. The win earned Louisville a bye to the quarterfinal round of the upcoming Big East tournament in New York.

NFL: The Tennessean reports the Tennessee Titans did not place the franchise tag on tight end Jared Cook, meaning the Titans could lose him. Monday was the deadline NFL teams could place franchise tags on players. Cook will likely become a free agent when the new league year begins March 12^th. Neither Cook’s agent nor Titans general manager Ruston Webster would comment on the matter Monday.

NHL: The Nashville Predators lost their third game in a row last night, falling to the Los Angeles Kings 5-1. The Predators are off until Friday when they host Edmonton at 7 in Bridgestone Arena.
