SPORTS UPDATE 2/6/13

College Football:   The first day of the national signing period is underway. Kentucky has received 20 signees thus far including Ryan Timmons of Franklin County. Western Kentucky will release its 2013 class when new coach Bobby Petrino speaks to the media later this afternoon as will Louisville coach Charlie Strong when he visits with the media early this afternoon.

Vanderbilt has received letters from 13 players including defensive back Ryan White from Trinity High in Louisville. Tennessee has 20 signees thus far, including Jalen Reeves-Maybin from Northeast High in Clarksville.

Murray State has received letters from 17 players including offensive lineman Koty Hix of Fort Campbell, running back Zack Katzman and offensive lineman Eli Wilson of Graves County, linebacker Jonathan Jackson of Mayfield, defensive end LaBront Scott of Murray High, along with Warwick Marsh, a defensive tackle from Northeast High in Clarksville..

College Basketball:   Western Kentucky coach Ray Harper announced Tuesday transfer guard Trency Jackson has joined the Hilltopper program. Jackson comes to the Hill from Texas Tech, where he started 10 games as a sophomore this season, averaging 6 points and two rebounds in 22 minutes of playing time.

Jackson began his collegiate career at Northwest Florida State College. Jackson will have a year and a half of eligibility left and will begin playing in the second semester of the 2013-14 school year.

Tonight’s action includes 11th ranked Louisville at Rutgers, 22nd ranked Oklahoma State hosts Baylor.

In the SEC: LSU plays Vanderbilt and Tennessee goes against Georgia.  Women’s action has Murray State at New Orleans.

MLB: The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez to a minor league contract, the team announced today. The deal includes an invitation to the club's spring training camp.
The left-hander is coming off a dreadful 2012 campaign spent with Kansas City and
Colorado. The 30-year-old went just 1-9 with an 8.07 ERA over 15 starts last season and
issued 53 walks over a total of 64 2/3 innings pitched.

Sanchez was traded by the Royals to the Rockies in July, but started only three games for Colorado before being shelved for the year due to a biceps injury the following month.

PGA Tour: One week after admitting he used deer antler spray which contains a banned substance, Vijay Singh is to meet today with Commissioner Tim Finchem at the AT&T National Pro Am at Pebble Beach.  

The Golf Channel reports first violation of the tour’s anti doping policy adopted in 2008 can result in a year’s suspension, however Commissioner Finchem may depart from the sanction guidance, as he deems appropriate in a particular case.
