SPORTS UPDATE 1/3/13

High School Basketball: The Hopkinsville Tiger boys and girls basketball teams are in action this evening, hosting Madisonville in a doubleheader at Tiger Gym. Coverage of both games begins with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 5:45 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP and online at whopam.com.

Christian County’s Lady Colonels are also in action this evening at Ohio County.

College Football:   There is one bowl game this evening as the Fiesta Bowl features 4th ranked Oregon and 5th ranked Kansas State.

The Louisville Cardinals are returning home today after defeating Florida 33-23 in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The website Saturday Down South reports the Sugar Bowl attendance for last night’s game was the worst since 1939. 54,178 fans were at the Mercedes Benz Superdome to watch the game.

College Basketball:   Kentucky coach John Calipari has his weekly call in show at 5 this evening on Lite 98.7.

Regional action has Western Kentucky at Arkansas Little rock for a men’s-women’s doubleheader. Other men’s action has Austin Peay at Southeast Missouri and Murray State at UT Martin.

Women’s SEC action has Kentucky playing its conference opener against Florida, while Tennessee is at South Carolina.

Top 25 games have 2nd ranked Michigan at Northwestern, 3rd ranked Arizona welcomes Colorado and 10th ranked Gonzaga travels to Pepperdine.

NFL: ESPN is citing sources that say Andy Reid could end up as the next coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Reid was fired Monday in Philadelphia, while Western Kentucky grad Romeo Crennel was also fired Monday as Chiefs coach. Reid had been scheduled to fly to Arizona to meet with Cardinals officials about their vacancy, but sources say a deal to name Reid in Kansas City could be wrapped up by days end.

PGA Tour: The 2013 season gets underway later today in Hawaii with the opening round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Nashville’s Brandt Snedeker is among those in the field.
