SPORTS HEADLINES 12/31/12

High School Basketball:  Union County's boys are participating in the Eldorado IL Christmas Tournament.

High School Wrestling: 15 teams from Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri participated in the Christian County Invitational event over the weekend. Fort Campbell won this year’s event, with Christian County second and University Heights finishing 5th.

College Basketball

Due to the New Year’s holiday, Kentucky coach John Calipari’s talk show and Big Blue Weekly will be heard Thursday night beginning at 5 on Lite 98.7.   Kentucky returns to action Wednesday afternoon hosting Eastern Michigan, with air time at 3:30 also on Lite 98.7.

Murray State’s women are in Ohio Valley Conference action this afternoon against Eastern Kentucky. Tip off at the CFSB Center in Murray is 1 pm.

There were two women’s games of note Sunday, with 13th ranked Tennessee rolling over Rutgers 66-47 and 7th ranked Kentucky defeated Marist 78-56.

College Football

There are several bowl games on this New Year’s Eve, including the Franklin American Music City Bowl, which features Vanderbilt and North Carolina State at LP Field in Nashville. Kickoff is at 11 am.

The Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX features Georgia Tech and Southern California, with air time at 1 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP. The Liberty Bowl in Memphis has Iowa State meeting Tulsa and the Chik-Fil-A Bowl in Atlanta has LSU against Clemson.

NFL: The Tennessee Titans knocked off the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars 38-20 with a pair of punts and interceptions returned for touchdowns.  Zach Brown had a 79 yard and 30 yard pick-six for Tennessee, which ends the regular season at 6-and-10.  Darius Reynaud returned punts of 69 yards and 81 yards for scores in the win.  Chris Johnson ran for 56 yards and a TD for the Titans.
