Week three of the Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl took place Friday night with several regional teams in action.

Class A:   Top ranked Mayfield defeated Kentucky Country Day 35-14

Class 2-A:   Caldwell County defeated Murray 10-7

Class 3-A:   Monroe County over South Warren 20-10

Class 4-A:   Warren East slid by Owensboro 14-7

Class 5-A:   Bowling Green defeated cross town rival Warren Central 35-21

High School Basketball

Heritage Christian Academy plays a quadruple header today against Micah Christian Academy. The boys and girls junior varsity action begins at noon, with coverage of the varsity games beginning with the Heritage Bank pre game show around 2:35 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP and worldwide at whopam.com.

Christian County will host its “Meet the Colonels” night this evening beginning at 6 in Colonel Gym at Christian County High School. The middle and high school boys and girls basketball teams will be featured in the event. Admission is $2.

One of the top junior golfers in the area has signed to play collegiate golf. Christian County High senior TJ Ferry signed a letter Friday afternoon to play for Murray State University.  Ferry is the sixth Colonel golfer in the last five years to play collegiately. 

Christian County High School will have a meeting for middle and high school students interested in being a part of the school’s first bass fishing team. The meeting will take place Monday at 5 pm in the library at Christian County High School.

College Basketball:   Five Kentucky players were in double figures as the Wildcats rolled past Lafayette 101-49 Friday night in Rupp Arena. Kyle Wiltjer led Kentucky with 23 points, followed by 22 points from Clarksville’s Alex Poythress, Nerlens Noel added 15, Willie Cauley-Stein pitched in 14 and Archie Goodwin had 13. The Wildcats improved to 2-1 on the season and host Morehead State next Wednesday night.

The Murray State Racers used a late 12-0 run to defeat St. John’s 72-67 to move to the championship game of the Charleston Classic. Stacy Wilson led 3-0 Murray State in scoring with 23 points. The Racers will meet Colorado Sunday evening at 7:30.

Oklahoma State improved to 3-0 on the season with a drubbing 62-45 of Tennessee in the second round of the Puerto Rico Tip off Classic Friday. Trae Golden had 11 points for the 2-1 Volunteers and was the only double figure scorer for Tennessee. The Vols play UMass in the third place game Sunday afternoon.

Former Christian County standout Donovan Kates scored 5 points and had one rebound in a losing effort as Manhattan fell to Harvard 79-45. The Jaspers are 0-2 to start the season.

Today’s games: Austin Peay is at DePaul in the second round of the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge, while Western Kentucky entertains Western Carolina.

Women’s action has Western Kentucky entertaining Northern Kentucky, Murray State plays at Longwood.

Western Kentucky women’s basketball has inked its final signee for the 2013 class. The Bowling Green Daily News reported Friday 6-4 post player Ruta Savickate of Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga became the fourth and final signee for new coach Michelle Clark Heard.

College Football: Joker Phillips coaches for the final time in Commonwealth Stadium as Kentucky’s coach and 19 seniors will take the home field for the final time this evening as the Wildcats meet Samford. Countdown to Kickoff begins coverage at 5 this evening on Lite 98.7.

Elsewhere in the SEC today: Tennessee plays at Vanderbilt. In the Ohio Valley Conference: Murray State closes out the regular season hosting Southeast Missouri, while Austin Peay entertains Tennessee Tech.

Western Kentucky will try to snap a three game losing streak and keep bowl hopes alive with a win tonight against Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns.

A Big 12 showdown has Oklahoma playing at West Virginia, with pre game coverage at 6 following Heritage Christian Academy basketball on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.
