SPORTS UPDATE 10/11/12

College Football: For the second time this week, Arkansas has lost another player for the season due to injury. Arkansas News.com reports Razorback defensive end Tenarius Wright is done due to a shoulder injury. Earlier this week, linebacker Alonzo Highsmith announced his season was over due to a foot injury.

Meanwhile, following practice this morning, Kentucky coach Joker Phillips announced defensive players Mikie Benton of Russellville, along with Ashely Lowery and Martavieous Neloms will not make the trip to Fayetteville due to injuries.  Kentucky Sports Radio.com reports of the 30 defensive players making the trip, 23 are freshmen or sophomores.  Pre game coverage for Saturday's game at 4:30 on Lite 98.7.

College Basketball: Louisville coach Rick Pitino tells CBS Sports.com he no longer plans to retire in 2017. During an interview which aired Wednesday on Sirius XM, Pitino told Jeff Goodman he plans to sign a contract extension and coach as long as his health is good. Pitino had said as recently as last year, he planned to retire when his contract ended in 2017. Louisville is ranked pre season number one or number two in several publications.

MLB: All four divisional series could come to an end today. In the National League, St. Louis and Washington start things off with the Cardinals leading the series 2 games to 1.

In Cincinnati, the Reds and Giants are tied two games each. In the American League, New York leads Baltimore two games to one as the teams play tonight at Yankee Stadium, with Detroit at Oakland and the series tied two games each.

NHL: Multiple sources tell ESPN NewYork.com that the NHL Players Association is drawing up a new collective bargaining agreement proposal and the NHL is urging the union to make it. Negotiators met for five hours Wednesday with not much progress made in the ongoing negotiations. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly says the games cancelled through October 24th will lose the league between $240 and 250 million dollars.

NASCAR: Dale Earnhardt Jr. will miss the next two races due to a concussion, ending his chances to win the Sprint Cup title. Earnhardt was diagnosed Wednesday and is to discuss the injury today in Charlotte. Earnhardt was injured in a 25 car pileup late in last Sunday’s race at Talladega.
