SPORTS UPDATE 10/4/12

The Christian County Colonels football team is going through final preparations today for their district matchup with the Apollo Eagles tomorrow night. Kickoff at 7 at the Stadium of Champions, with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 6:35 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP and worldwide at whopam.com. The Hopkinsville Tigers are off this week and will return to action next Friday night at Ohio County.

Aaron and Allen Harrison will tell the world later this afternoon where they plan to play college basketball. The twins from Houston will likely choose between Kentucky and Maryland when they make their announcement at 4 Hopkinsville time on ESPN U.

Former University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt said in an affidavit that she initially felt she was being forced to step down as coach by UT athletics director Dave Hart, who later told Summitt his comments had been misinterpreted. The affidavit is part of a lawsuit filed by former UT women’s media relations director Debby Jennings.

ESPN reports Shawn Eichorst has resigned as athletics director at the University of Miami to replace Tom Osborne as AD at the University of Nebraska. Osborne is stepping down from the position January 1st. Eichorst had been at Miami since April, 2011 and before that spent six years as deputy athletics director at Wisconsin.

The NFL weekend kicks off tonight as the 4-0 Arizona Cardinals play at the 2-2 St. Louis Rams. The Cardinals have won 10 of the last 11 meetings. You can hear the game beginning at 7 tonight on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

It’s an off day before Major League Baseball playoff action begins with Wild Card games tomorrow. In the National League, St. Louis will travel to Atlanta for a game which begins at 4:07 Hopkinsville time, with the American League game between Baltimore and Texas taking place at 7:37 local time in Arlington. The winners will face Washington and the New York Yankees repsectively in divisional series play beginning Sunday.

Golfweek Magazine reports had Rory McIlroy been five minutes late for his singles match against Keegan Bradley in the Ryder Cup this past Sunday, it would have cost Europe a full point. McIlroy arrived 10 minutes before his match with Bradley because of confusion with the time zone.
