SPORTS UPDATE 9/13/12

The Christian County Colonels and Hopkinsville Tigers are making final preparations today for their Friday night football games. The Colonels travel to Fort Campbell in a game you can hear with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 6:35 on Lite 98.7, while the Tigers host Allen County Scottsville at the Stadium of Champions at 7, with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 6:35 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips says running back CoShik Williams will be the starter when the Wildcats host Western Kentucky Saturday evening. Williams missed last week’s win over Kent State due to injury.

Meanwhile, Phillips said following Wednesday’s practice the Wildcats need to create more turnovers defensively. Through two games, the Wildcats have forced only one turnover. Coverage of Saturday’s game which kicks off at 6 pm Hopkinsville time, airs at 4:30 on Lite 98.7.

The University of Connecticut has an afternoon news conference scheduled to reportedly announce the retirement of men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun. Calhoun has won three national championships in his 26 seasons as coach of the Huskies. Current assistant Kevin Ollie is expected to be named as Calhoun’s successor.

The Green Bay Packers will likely be without wide receiver Greg Jennings when they face the Chicago Bears this evening. Jennings has not practiced all week following a groin injury in last Sunday’s loss to San Francisco. You can hear tonight’s game beginning at 7 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Representatives of the National Hockey League and its Players Association are nowhere near having a new collective bargaining agreement. The two sides met for three hours Wednesday with no progress reported.   The current CBA expires Saturday, with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman saying if a deal is not reached by midnight Saturday, players will be locked out.

Major League Baseball action has St. Louis opening a series in Los Angeles this evening.

The Bowling Green Hot Rods have announced their 2013 season schedule. The single A Midwest League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays will open the season at South Bend April 4 and open the home portion of the season against Lansing April 8.
