SPORTS UPDATE 9/5/12

It appears there’s more trouble for former Kentucky and current Texas Tech basketball coach Billy Gillispie. CBS Sports.com reported last night since Gillispie’s arrival, 15 players have left the program and during his 18 months in Lubbock more than 30 members of the program, including staffers have departed.

One player was required to practice with stress fractures in both legs, and players had to go for more than 20 hours a week(the NCAA limit) and at times had practices of over four hours in a row.  Gillispie reportedly remains hospitalized in a Lubbock hospital, where he has been since Friday.

Forty years ago today, tragedy struck the 1972 Munich Olympic games. Palestinian terrorists took 11 Israeli athletes hostage and ended up killing them at a German airport. These were the days before 24 hours news networks, ESPN and the internet. It was the late broadcaster Jim McKay who told the world in these words “They’re all gone.”

Major League Baseball this afternoon has Cincinnati hosting Philadelphia and St. Louis hosting the NY Mets. Tonight’s action includes Chicago at Washington and Atlanta hosting Colorado.
