SPORTS UPDATE 9/4/12

ESPN reports Texas Tech and former Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie remains hospitalized in Lubbock after being admitted Friday after he thought he was having a heart attack or stroke.

The hospital admission came at the same time as Tech players were meeting with school administrators to air complaints about treatment of players and Gillispie’s practice habits.

Kentucky Sports Radio.com reports former Xavier basketball player Dez Wells has selected Maryland as his new school. Wells visited Kentucky, Memphis and Oregon before making his decision. Wells will sit out this season and be eligible for the 2013-14 season. Wells was recently expelled from Xavier after being arrested on sexual assault charges.

Kentucky is picked as an early seven point favorite in its home football opener against Kent State Saturday night in Lexington. Kickoff is set for 6:30, with Countdown to Kickoff at 5 on Lite 98.7.

The NFL season begins tomorrow night at MetLife Stadium as the defending champion NY Giants host the Dallas Cowboys. Coverage of the game airs at 7 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP where you can also hear Sports Tonight with Todd Hamilton beginning at 5:08 tomorrow evening.

American Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III has named his four captains picks for matches against Europe later this month at Medinah Country Club in Chicago. The picks are: Nashville native Brandt Snedeker, Jin Furyk—who has been on every Ryder and President’s Cup team since 1997, Steve Stricker and Dustin Johnson.

Major League Baseball tonight includes St. Louis hosting the NY Mets, Cincinnati entertains Philadelphia, Atlanta hosts Colorado and the Chicago Cubs at Washington.
