SPORTS UPDATE 8/22/12

The Lexington Herald Leader reports University of Kentucky football season ticket sales are down nearly 10-thousand from the same time last year. 37-thousand 154 season tickets have been sold for the 2012 season. Kentucky opens the home portion of its season September 8th against Kent State.

Meanwhile, the Tennessean reports Vanderbilt has sold more than 18-thousand season tickets for the upcoming season, up over six thousand from a year ago. Vanderbilt opens its season next Thursday night hosting South Carolina.

The Tennessean reports the Tennessee Titans have released defensive tackle Shaun Smith. Smith says he received the news this morning via a text message. Smith signed a $7.25 million three year deal last July. The eight year veteran had 44 tackles and one quarterback sack last season.  

Former Augusta National chairman Hootie Johnson tells Bloomberg News he tapped Darla Moore to be one of the first female members of Augusta National. The 58-year-old South Carolina businesswoman and former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice were named as the female members on Monday.

Major League Baseball action this afternoon has the Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee, with St. Louis hosting Houston, Atlanta at Washington and Cincinnati at Philadelphia this evening.

A shoulder injury has forced the retirement of the three year old colt Bodemeister, who finished second to I’ll Have Another in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Bodemeister did win the Arkansas Derby.
