DISTRICT BASEBALL/SOFTBALL UPDATE 5/21/13

There's not been a decision as of this writing as to whether the 8th district baseball and softball championship games will be played this evening at Ft. Campbell.

If they play, Christian County meets University Heights in softball at 5:30, with Christian County and Hopkinsville to meet in the baseball final at 6.  Coverage of the baseball game begins with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 5:45 on News/Talk WHOP and online at whopam.com.

When we receive information on whether the games will be played, we will pass it along on our websites, Facebook and the WHOP family of stations.

We have learned that the 5th district championship games for baseball and softball scheduled to be played at Trigg County have been postponed for today.  Plans are to play them tomorrow.

In the 7th district, the softball game between Dawson Springs and Hopkins Central in cancelled, but there's no word on the baseball game between Caldwell County and Hopkins Central at this time.

 
SPORTS UPDATE 5/21/13

College Basketball: Kentucky coach John Calipari says he’s excited to coach Willie Cauley-Stein and Alex Poythress this coming season. In an article on coachcal.com, Calipari said Cauley-Stein has the chance to be one of the better players he’s ever coached. Calipari also says Poythress returning for his sophomore season should not indicate he had a bad freshman year. The Kentucky coach says it takes some players longer to mature.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports Baylor guard Deuce Bello announced Monday he is transferring to the University of Missouri. Bello averaged almost three points per game in his two seasons at Baylor. Bello will sit out this season and have two years of eligibility remaining.

Golf: The United States Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club announced today they are enacting the anchored putting ban as a new rule in 2016.  The new rule, Rule 14-1b, basically states that a player cannot anchor a belly putter or a long putter against one’s body when making a stroke. It doesn't make those clubs illegal, just the act of anchoring said club against one’s body.

2nd ranked Alabama looks for its second consecutive NCAA women’s championship as play is underway today at the University of Georgia golf course in Athens. The Crimson Tide—featuring freshman Emma Talley of Princeton—are also gunning for their sixth consecutive victory this season and season victory number 8.

NFL: Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is expected to miss the team's offseason training activities as he continues to recover from back surgery performed last month.

According to the Cowboys' website, Romo had a cyst removed from his back last month. The team expects him to be ready for training camp in July. Romo inked a six-year contract extension in late March, a deal reported to be worth $108 million with $55 million guaranteed.

MLB: The Cincinnati Reds play game two of their series at the NY Mets this evening. Other National League action has Chicago taking on Pittsburgh and St. Louis at San Diego. Interleague action has Atlanta meeting Minnesota.

NBA: The San Antonio Spurs will try to go up 2-0 in the NBA's Western Conference finals when they host the Memphis Grizzlies this evening.

NHL: Tonight’s playoff action has the Boston Bruins trying to put the New York Rangers in a 3-0 hole, while the San Jose Sharks attempt to even  their Western Conference semifinal against the defending champion Los Angeles Kings. 

 
SPORTS HEADLINES 5/21/13

High School Baseball-Monday’s games

8th district at Fort Campbell: Christian County advanced to the championship game with a 10-0 five inning win over Fort Campbell. Chance Carner threw a no hitter, striking out nine in the game. The Colonels were led at the plate by Sam Blane, who had two hits. Christian County improved to 23-14 with the win, Fort Campbell finishes the season 8-22.

Hopkinsville won the nightcap, defeating University Heights 10-2. The Tigers scored two runs in the first, added 2 in the third to take a 4-0 lead before UHA scored twice in the 5th inning to pull to within 4-2. Hopkinsville then scored six runs in the 5th and 6th inning to blow the game open.

The Tigers were led by Taylor Saltsman who went 2-3 with two rbi. University Heights was led by Austin Byrum’s two hits. Easton McGee got the pitching win for Hopkinsville, now 15-15 on the season, while Jacob Stevens took the loss for University Heights who finishes the season 11-12.

5th district at Trigg County: Trigg County edged Livingston Central 7-6, while Crittenden County run ruled Lyon County 15-5 in 5 innings.

6th district at Henderson County: Union County slid by Webster County 2-1.

7th district at Caldwell County: Madisonville run ruled Dawson Springs 10-0 in 5 innings.

13th district at Franklin Simpson: Logan County shut out Russellville 7-0, with Franklin Simpson winning 21-1 over Todd Central.

8th district final at Fort Campbell: Christian County meets Hopkinsville for the third time this season at 6 pm, with the Heritage Bank pre game at 5:45 on News/Talk WHOP and online at whopam.com.

5th district final at Trigg County: Trigg County hosts Crittenden County.

7th district at Caldwell County: Caldwell County meets Hopkins Central

13th district final at Franklin Simpson: Logan County meets Franklin Simpson.

High School Softball-Monday’s games

8th district at Fort Campbell: University Heights improved to 23-9 on the season with a 13-2, 6 inning win over Hopkinsville. The Lady Tigers finish the season 3-25.  

Christian County run ruled Fort Campbell 15-0 in three innings to improve to 23-12 on the season, with Fort Campbell finishing the season 0-12.

5th district at Trigg County: Livingston Central blanked Trigg County 15-0 in 4 innings, with no score reported on the Lyon County-Crittenden County game.

7th district at Dawson Springs: Madisonville shut out Caldwell County 8-0.

13th district at Russellville: Both games went five innings with Franklin Simpson blanking Russellville 12-0 and Todd Central defeating Logan County 12-2.

Today’s games

8th district final at Fort Campbell: Christian County meets University Heights at 5:30 pm.

5th district final at Trigg County: Livingston Central meets the Lyon County-Crittenden County winner.

7th district at Dawson Springs: Dawson Springs hosts Hopkins Central.

Two local high school basketball players signed collegiate letters on Monday. Heritage Christian Academy’s Alex Walker will play his college hoops for Mid Continent University, while Christian County’s Jamesha Mosley is headed to play for Cleveland State Community College in Tennessee.

College Baseball

Former Hopkinsville High player Jarod Perry has led Kaskaskia College to the Region 24 NJCAA championship. Kaskaskia will now face South Suburban in the NJCAA Northern District tournament on Friday, with the other matchup featuring Iowa Western meeting Wabash Valley. The double elimination tournament will go through Sunday.

The Southeastern Conference tournament begins today in Hoover, AL. Kentucky will be in one of the play in games, meeting Ole Miss at 9:30 this morning. If Kentucky wins, they will face Arkansas at 9:30 am Wednesday.

Western Kentucky is the fifth seed for the upcoming Sun Belt Conference tournament at Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette, LA. The Hilltoppers will face fourth seed Florida Atlantic in its first game at 9 am Wednesday. The tournament will play with a double elimination format. The Hilltoppers would play again Thursday at 9 am in an elimination game or at 4 pm in a winner’s game.

College Softball: Kentucky’s opening game in NCAA super regional play at Arizona State will take place at 9 pm Saturday evening, with the second and third game if needed to be played Sunday in Tempe, AZ.

College Basketball: Murray State coach Steve Prohm told ESPN during an NBA pre draft combine he has found Isaiah Cannan’s replacement at point guard. It’s Zay Jackson, who was suspended last season after serving 49 days in jail after hitting a man in his vehicle in a parking lot last September.

Prohm says the school’s athletic department made the decision to allow Jackson to return. Jackson has a 2.75 grade point average and has not been an issue since returning to the team.

The Leaf Chronicle reports the first of the five candidates for Austin Peay’s athletic director’s position was on campus Monday. Matt Pope is senior associate athletics director at Chattanooga. He said he sees potential on Austin Peay’s athletic department and says the school is on the cusp of greatness.

Pope added Austin Peay is a sleeping giant with so many opportunities that have not been tapped into yet. Another of the candidates, University of Memphis associate athletics director Bill Lansden, is scheduled to interview later this week.

NHL: The Tennessean reports the Nashville Predators have fired assistant coach Peter Horachek. Horachek has been with the team since the 2002-03 season. The club has not offered any official comment.

District tournament action for high school baseball and softball begins across Kentucky today.

8th district at Fort Campbell: Baseball has Christian County meeting Fort Campbell at 5:30, followed by Hopkinsville and University Heights. Coverage of both games begins with the Heritage Bank pre game show at 5:15 on News/Talk WHOP and online at whopam.com.

Softball has Hopkinsville playing University Heights at 5:30, followed by Christian County and Fort Campbell.

Fans who are attending the games are reminded to enter through gate 3 at Fort Campbell and present their driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance.

5th district baseball at Trigg County:  Crittenden County meets Lyon County, while Trigg County hosts Livingston Central.

6th district baseball at Henderson County: Union County meets Webster County.

7th district baseball at Caldwell County: Madisonville meets Dawson Springs.

Two local student/athletes are to sign collegiate letters today. Heritage Christian Academy’s Alex Walker is scheduled to sign a letter to play basketball at Mid Continent University at 1 pm, while Christian County’s Jamesha Mosley to sign a letter to play basketball for Cleveland State Community College at 2:30 pm.

College Basketball: The Tennessean reports Murfreesboro Riverdale’s Alexa Middleton has committed to play her college hoops for the University of Tennessee. The 5-9 guard made her decision Sunday night. The senior to be averaged 15.9 points during her junior season leading Riverdale to an undefeated season and the class 3-A state championship.

College Softball: Kentucky advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the second time in school history Sunday, defeating Virginia Tech 1-0. Former Christian County standout Griffin Joiner was 1-3 in the game. Kentucky improved to 41-19 and will meet Arizona State in a best of three series next weekend.

Alabama defeated Western Kentucky in the finals of the Tuscaloosa regional 13-1. Western Kentucky finished the season 43-18 in making its first NCAA appearance. Alabama advanced to meet Tennessee in Super Regional play. Tennessee blanked NC State 7-0 in the Knoxville regional.

Austin Peay has announced its five finalists for the position of Athletics Director.

They are Matt Pope, senior associate athletics director at Chattanooga, Bill Lansden, associate athletics director for athletic development at the University of Memphis, Derek van der Merwe, deputy athletics director and chief operating officer at Central Michigan, Chad W. Kimmel, managing group leader-major gifts for the department of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Wisconsin and Julio Freire, senior associate athletics director at Nevada Las Vegas.

The first interviews will take place today as Matt Pope will visit the Austin Peay campus, with Bill Lansden to visit on Thursday. Austin Peay is searching to replace long time athletics director Dave Loos, who recently announced he will step down from the job, but will remain as men’s basketball coach.

Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods completed a suspended game from May 10th with West Michigan, losing 5-1, before winning the regularly scheduled game 8-0. The Hot Rods complete their series with West Michigan this evening.

The Nashville Sounds lost at Salt Lake City 8-7 in 10 innings. The Sounds open a four game series this evening at Tacoma.
