There were no major mis-haps or incidents in the City of Hopkinsville while bringing in the new year, though HPD did arrest a man on drug trafficking charges yesterday morning.

The incident began as a routine traffic stop around 3:30am at the intersection of E 19^th and Woodmill, according to the arrest card from Officer Robert Sibal, which says he pulled over 19-year old Brandon Smith of Hopkinsville for not having an illuminated license plate.

When he got to the vehicle, he reportedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from Smith’s vehicle and a search of the car turned up a quantity of the illegal weed in the console.

There was also reportedly a grinder in the vehicle, which is commonly used to grind marijuana. Smith was charged with Trafficking in Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, driving with more than one driver’s license and not having his license plate illuminated.

Someone attempted to break into a local ATM machine sometime in the last day or two.

The surveillance footage was going to be looked at to determine the exact time of the incident, but someone caused severe damage to the cash machine at the Fort Campbell Federal Credit Union on Glass Avenue.

The perpetrator reportedly damaged the exterior door, the lock and an interior metal box, though the report says he or she didn’t get away with any of the cash. The damaged machine is valued at $10,000.

It’s better to be safe than sorry and the Pennyrile Citizens Corps Council is urging area residents to make a New Years resolution to be prepared for disasters and emergencies in 2012.

Chairman Dan Nicholson says the PRCCC is participating in a national campaign called Resolve to Be Ready and Prepared for Disasters and Emergencies in 2012.

According to Nicholson, you never know when life can take an unexpected turn and he says it’s always smart to be prepared for any situation.

A Hopkinsville woman claims burglars stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from her residence.

58-year old Kathy Knight of Country Club Lane told Hopkinsville Police yesterday that an unknown person entered her residence and removed jewelry and coins worth over $1,500 without her permission.

A suspect description was not provided in the report, but police say the investigation into the burglary remains ongoing.

Law enforcement agencies across Kentucky and Tennessee will be out in full force looking for impaired drivers.

In Kentucky, Kentucky State Police will be continuing its Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

According to state police, during the 2010 New Years Eve enforcement period, there were 949 crashes resulting in 316 injuries and 3 deaths.
