Seven people were arrested for allegedly driving impaired over the New Year’s weekend by Clarksville Police.

Extra patrols were put on Clarksville streets, partially funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, which resulted in seven DUI arrests, 29 speeding tickets, 23 equipment violations and 17 citations for drivers unable to provide proof of insurance.

In all, 94 vehicles were stopped and 100 charges were levied as a result of the stops.

More details are now known about the robbery of a Hopkinsville convenience store from early this morning.

The official report from Hopkinsville Police says a black male wearing a mask walked into the Fort Campbell Boulevard Max-Fuel Express just south of Clinic Drive around 2:17 and wielded a knife.

The 25-year old female cashier working had been sweeping the floor when the man wearing camouflage Army fatigues showed her the large machete knife and demanded all of the store’s money.

The suspect destroyed and removed the store’s surveillance system before fleeing the scene, with part of the equipment later found in a parking lot. The suspect reportedly fled on foot northward toward Wal-Mart.

He got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and the destroyed security system is valued at $1,100.

The first baby to be born at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in 2012 was born to a first-time mother.

Jennie Stuart spokesman Jim Goss says Barrett Carter Rios came into the world just after 6am this morning weighing seven pounds and two ounces and measured at 19 and a half inches.

Barrett is the first child for mother Olivia Rios of Hopkinsville and Goss says mother and child are doing well. Doctor Jerry Hart delivered the year’s first baby.

Goss says the hospital is presenting the mother with flowers and will give the baby a 100 dollar gift card.

It was a cold morning to have electricity problems, but that’s exactly what happened for over a thousand local households this morning.

Barney Bishop with Pennyrile Rural Electric said a problem at the Cerulean substation caused 1,300 customers to lose power shortly after 6am. Crews responded immediately and had everyone back up and going by 8:30 or so.

Areas affected included the Sinking Fork region, Dawson Springs Road and many side roads.

A young Clarksville man is in Vanderbilt University Medical Center after a single vehicle wreck on Madison Street last night.

A news release from Clarksville Police says the 19-year old man was a back seat passenger in a vehicle driven by another 19-year old just after 10 when the car ran off the road and struck a utility pole.

The injured man was the only occupant not wearing a seat belt and he was thrown from the back seat into the windshield. He sustained head injuries and was flown by helicopter to Vanderbilt.

Public Information Officer Jim Knoll says very little information is available and asks anyone who may have witnessed the wreck to call the tips line at 931-645-8477. The name of the injured was being withheld, pending family notification.
