NDMS students were honored for placing in the top ten of the mayor's essay contest.

The Hopkinsville Police Officer who pulled a teen driver from a burning car in Muhlenberg County last week was honored at Tuesday night’s City Council Meeting.

Police Chief Guy Howie noted that recognitions often come at the annual HPD awards ceremony, but regretfully said Officer Shannon White Tinsley will soon be leaving the force to take a position with Kentucky State Police.      

Chief Howie read a statement from the father of 16-year old Zach Morris—Dave Morris—who thanked the officer for her bravery last Friday on Kentucky 189 just across the county line.

Officer Tinsley thanked the Mayor, Chief and Council for the award, but attributed to the events to a power higher than herself.

Officer Tinsley has stayed in contact with the Morris family, taking food to them at an Evansville Hospital.

Ten North Drive Middle School students were also recognized for placing in the top ten of Mayor Dan Kemp’s Mayor’s Scholars’ essay contest, with Austin Nabb coming in third, Jonathon Colley second and Lauren Knox the winner.

In other business, Financial officer Robert Martin said the city has an available cash balance of just over 7.7 million dollars—about 1.2 million more than the balance from a year ago.

The city also agreed to re-authorize a 10-year lease agreement regarding Western Hills golf course, with Christian Fiscal Court also a party in that arrangement.

The company tasked to repair the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge on the Trigg-Marshall County line has begun engineering work.

A news release from the Highway Department says Hall Construction of Kentucky Vice President Tom Roberts says his engineers are working out final details to allow steel to be fabricated to replace the missing span knocked out by the Delta Mariner on the evening of January 26^th.

Hall Contracting was the low bidder on the project and promised to have it completed by Memorial Day weekend.

Roberts says work hasn’t progressed to the point where steel can be poured yet, but progress is being made.

Stiff penalties and fines will be assessed to Hall by the state, should they fail to meet the deadline.

A vehicle versus bicycle wreck on Fort Campbell Boulevard in Clarksville this morning sent a young man to the hospital.

A news release from Clarksville Police says the 22-year old man was riding his bike north in the southbound lane around 9:15. 33-year old Cody Waltman of Clarksville was southbound and made a right turn into a business and did not see the man on the bicycle.

The bicycle collided with Waltman’s truck, sending the rider off his bike and onto the pickup. The bicycle rider, whose name has not been released, was taken to Gateway Medical Center for head and other injuries. Police say he is in stable condition, but would be transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet and police say no charges will be filed.

It took 17 pages of police reports to properly document an incident on Alumni Avenue Monday morning that resulted in the arrests of four people on numerous charges.

The incident happened just before 5 at 143 Alumni, according to the report from Hopkinsville Police, which says 21-year old Brandy Breeding of Hopkinsville went to the address to demand her vehicle from her husband—22-year old Colby Breeding—following a fight from the previous night.

When Ms. Breeding went to back out of the driveway, she then allegedly pulled into the yard in an attempt to run over her husband and another man at the home—35-year old Latroy Reed.

Ms. Breeding missed hitting them, but ran into a basketball goal and tree instead. She then allegedly fled the scene to an apartment, where she was located by police and taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

The Breedings reportedly lived together with another couple identified as 22-year old Justin Crenshaw and 20-year old Brandi Sneed at a 105 Thornton Court apartment.

When the investigation of the incident continued there, police allegedly found two small children living in filth, including animal feces and knives on the floor in addition to marijuana and drug paraphernalia in plain view.

The Breedings, Crenshaw and Sneed were all arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor. Brandy Breeding was charged with wanton endangerment and she and her husband were also charged with possession of marijuana.

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary report that took place recently in the area of Greenville Road.
Jacob Popping of Greenville Road told sheriff’s deputies that sometime Friday and yesterday his former room-mate allegedly entered his home without his permission while he was away and stole over $1,200 worth of personal possessions.
According to sheriff’s deputies, there was no sign of forced entry and a neighbor stated a dark colored truck, matching the former room-mates vehicle was at the residence Saturday.
A surround system, a flat screen television and a gaming system were listed as stolen in the report.
The burglary reportedly remains under investigation and no arrests have been made in this case.
