A wreck in the Hopkinsville Wal-Mart parking lot injured a Louisiana woman yesterday afternoon.

The report from city police says 63-year old Barbara Faciane of Hopkinsville had backed out of her parking space and was about to drive away when 48-year old Rita Mitchell of Elkton backed into her vehicle from another spot.

Both drivers went uninjured in the slow collision, but Faciane’s passenger—56-year old Johnnie Copeland of Elm Grove, Louisiana—was taken by ambulance to Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

One person was killed and three were injured in a wreck just west of Elkton this morning.

The incident happened around 8:20 on U.S. 68-80 at the Tress Shop Road intersection, also known as Kentucky Highway 475.
State Police say 78-year old Hershel Word of Hopkinsville was driving a mini-van and was turning off Tress Shop onto 68 and pulled into the path of an eastbound pickup driven by 34-year old Thomas Bowles of Bowling Green. Bowles was unable to avoid a wreck and hit the van in the driver’s side, rolling it on to its side.
Two ambulances from Todd County and two from Christian took the patients to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, though Word would succumb to his injuries at the hospital. Bowles and his two passengers—18-year old Brittany Peay and 3-year old Tiffany Hill of Bowling Green—were also taken to Jennie Stuart. Bowles would later be transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.
Trooper Luis Palmer was on the scene to re-construct the accident and traffic was shut down or restricted to one lane both ways for about two and a half hours.
The Todd County Sheriff’s Office, Todd County Rescue Squad and Fairview Volunteer Fire Department assisted on the scene.

A young Madisonville man was arrested yesterday in connection with several recent burglaries in Hopkins County.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Troutman says the department received reports of multiple burglaries in the Hanson area during the last week of April—especially in the Stagecoach Road and J.D. Buchanan Road areas.

After a short investigation, police arrested 19-year old Ethan Davis of Hall Street, Madisonville with three counts of burglary. Davis is accused of breaking into one home and two storage sheds.

Deputies were able to recover some of the stolen property including tools and a four-wheeler, but a 1991 Yamaha Timberwolf remains missing. Anyone who has information on the crimes or the whereabouts of the remaining property is asked to call the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office at 270-821-5661.

A University Heights Academy teacher has received a national honor.

An email from the private school says history teacher Brett Pritchett was the only teacher in Kentucky selected for the James Madison Memorial Fellowship, which financially supports secondary teachers in obtaining their master’s degree.

The studies must include a concentration of courses in the history and principles of the United States Constitution. The program is funded by income from a trust fund in the U.S. Treasury and from additional private gifts, corporate contributions and foundation grants.

Recipients are required to teach American history or social studies in a secondary school for at least one year for each year of fellowship support. Only one teacher receives the award in each state or territory each year.

A Hopkinsville man will have to appear in court later this month on charges that he sprayed a dog confined to a pen in the face with bug spray.

Christian County Sheriff’s Sgt. Andre Radford served a criminal summons to 79-year old Frank Arvin of 3140 Butler Road Thursday afternoon.

The summons alleges that Arvin admitted to spraying a German Shepherd with Raid bug spray Tuesday inside a neighbor’s back yard. The dog is in an enclosed fence and police say Arvin reached inside to spray the animal in the face.

The dog’s owner is identified as Chris Knight and a witness told him about seeing the incident. Arvin will face cruelty to animal charges in district court May 23^rd.
