Ninth District State Representative Myron Dossett isn’t easily angered, but is admittedly upset about the re-districting plan passed by the State House earlier this week in Frankfort.
The bill gave a much larger portion of Christian County to 15th District State Representative Brent Yonts of Greenville—all the way to the house across Nashville Street in Pembroke from Representative Dossett’s home.
In fact, anyone living north of U.S. 41 will be voting in the 15th District under the proposed bill, after being in the 9th for over 20 years.
Representative Dossett, a Republican, says he would be honored to serve the people of Madisonville—now included in his proposed district, but couldn’t believe where the Democratically controlled house drew the line.
Dossett had held off on announcing his candidacy for re-election until seeing where the lines would be drawn, but says he will run against friend and fellow Republican Ben Wade of Hopkins County in May. The State Senate still has to vote on the plan, though Dossett says he expects it to pass.

It’s not often that a rumor is the major story out of a local government meeting, but that was the case at this morning’s meeting of the Todd County Fiscal Court.
Todd County Attorney Harold “Mac” Johns says the rumor is that 3rd District State Senator Joey Pendleton will no longer represent Todd anymore under a planned re-districting plan that could be voted on by the senate next week.
The proposal would place Todd in a seven-county area including Logan, Allen, Monroe, Metcalfe and Simpson.
Johns says Todd is better off with Senator Pendleton representing it in Frankfort.
Nothing is set in stone and Johns urged Magistrates to talk to whoever may be able to help about keeping the 3rd District in tact.
Senator Pendleton said he had heard of that rumor, but doesn’t know if that will be what happens. He says he has represented Caldwell and Muhlenberg Counties before and he’ll be fine with having them again. In the House, 16th District Representative Martha Jane King would keep Todd and Logan Counties and gain a small portion of Warren under the current plan.
In other business, court approved final reading of budgets for the County Clerk and Sheriff’s offices.

Snow came as forecast Thursday, causing numerous wrecks and school closings across the region. Snowfall amounts ranged from less than an inch to about an inch and a half across the area, but it didn’t really matter as plummeting temperatures caused wet roads to freeze over and any remaining snowfall stuck to the pavement.
Numerous wrecks were reported across western Kentucky and middle Tennessee, some with injury. The Highway Department has been out salting the roads, but temperatures falling near or below 20 degrees will cause that process to become less productive. Nearly every school system in the area, including Christian, has called off classes for Friday. You can find a complete list of closings on our website and listen to the WHOP Family of Stations for updates on this winter weather situation. ** 01/12/2012am |
