A kitchen fire at an East 7^th St. home yesterday did damage, but was put out quickly by the Hopkinsville Fire Department.

The first call went out for a fire at 1527 E. 7^th around 1:03pm and fire-fighters had the blaze out by 1:14. The fire began on the kitchen stove and spread to the cabinets and through a vent in the ceiling, according to the report, which says the heat melted a supply pipe to a water heater causing the water to pour onto the floor.

An estimated $5,000 worth of damage was done to the home belonging to Cherie Person and $1,000 worth done to the contents.

No one was injured in the incident.

A wreck in Clarksville Wednesday morning sent a Clarksville man to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The incident happened around 9:50 on Ashland City Road, according to Clarksville Police, who say a vehicle operated by Christopher Gobel of Clarksville drifted into oncoming traffic and hit a vehicle driven by Patricia Hodges of Southside, Tennessee head on.

Gobel was taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, while Ms. Hodges was treated for minor injuries at Gateway Medical Center. Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the incident.

The 11^th Annual Hopkinsville Police Citizens Academy will get underway next month.

Anyone interested in learning about what Hopkinsville Police officers do on an average day are encouraged to apply now, with Public Information Officer Paul Ray saying everyone who has attended in the past has come away with a wealth of knowledge.

Officer Ray says anyone 18 years old and older can apply, as long as you are a citizen of Hopkinsville.

The classes meet every Thursday evening for eight weeks and also feature a Saturday live fire exercise. Applications can be picked up at the police department.

The Hopkinsville Police Department has announced promotions of two lieutenants.

Promoted from Lieutenant of the Patrol Division to Captain of the Operations Bureau was Michael Seis, who has been with HPD since December of 2001.

Lieutenant Clayton Sumner was promoted to Captain of the Administration Bureau. He has been with the department since November of 2002.

A former Hopkinsville-Christian County Fugitive of the Week was arrested Wednesday night.

Arrested on the strength of several warrants was 22-year old Detrik Sharber of Hopkinsville, who had been pulled over in a traffic stop on South Campbell Street.

Sharber is charged with contempt of court, failure to appear in court and failure to pay fines.
