A suspect wanted in connection with last week’s shooting incident in Hopkinsville was arrested on Oak Street Monday night.

Hopkinsville Police named 23-year old Desmond Leavell of the city as a suspect less than two hours after 21-year old Demario Bennett showed up at a Greenville Road residence with a gunshot wound to the upper back March 5th.

Leavell was arrested just before 10pm Monday night at 1800 Oak Street and charged with first degree assault. The warrant says Bennett identified Leavell as the driver of a vehicle which chased him from the Yall’s service station on East 9th Street. Bennett said several shots were fired at him during the chase—one hitting him in the back.

Another suspect in the case also allegedly verified Leavell was in the vehicle. The only other arrest made in connection with the incident was 25-year old Barri Brown of Hopkinsville, who was charged with first degree assault on the day of the crime.

Leavell was also served with a warrant for probation violation, as he had been previously convicted of six counts of wanton endangerment, three counts of criminal mischief, tampering with evidence and assault under extreme emotional disturbance.
