Todd County Senior Center seeking monetary help

Sometimes a personal story of triumph or tragedy is the best way to make a point and an agency in desperate need of funding in Elkton used a positive story that could have turned out so much worse to make a request Monday night.

Todd County Senior Citizens Center Director Tammy Sears approached Elkton City Council to ask for a donation to the center, which has been hindered by budget cuts over the last several years.

Ms. Sears says the number of people served by the meals on wheels program has dropped and it’s harder to fund other programs the elderly depend on.

One example given was a woman in her 70’s whom Ms. Sears heard about from a neighbor concerned about her safety a few years ago. The woman was found in a bad emotional and physical state without any close family.

Ms. Sears says the Senior Center was able to build a relationship with the woman and she is now doing well and is active at the Senior Center in Elkton.

The Senior Center board accompanied Ms. Sears to the meeting where they asked for any monetary donation the city could afford to give. She also said the public is welcome to donate to their cause and said several residents already have.

Elkton City Council will make its decision at its next meeting.
