Winter Weather Advisory Issued

Crews pre-treat the roadway in anticipation of winter weather

Most of western Kentucky and middle Tennessee are now under a Winter Weather Advisory as a light accumulation of ice, sleet and snow is expected through Friday morning.

The advisory for the southern Pennyrile is in effect from 2am until 9am Friday, while the advisory for middle Tennessee runs through noon Friday. National Weather Service in Paducah Lead Forecaster Chris Noles says a majority of the freezing rain, sleet and snow should hold off until the early morning hours.

Noles says the amounts of precipitation won’t be impressive, but just a little freezing rain can make roads and walkways hazardous when temperatures have been as cold as they’ve been the last few days.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has already placed crews on roads pre-treating the pavement in advance of the wintry weather with a brine solution. The layer of salt should alleviate some of the problems on heavier-traveled roads, but those expecting to commute in the morning should allow themselves some extra time.

Whatever does fall won’t stick around for long as the high temperature Friday is forecast at 39 degrees. Stay tuned to the WHOP Family of Stations and to our websites and Facebook page for the latest on the developing weather situation.
