Daytime homeless shelter likely to be busier during cold snap

Some of the coldest days of the winter are expected this week and that likely means Hopkinsville’s new daytime homeless shelter will be put to good use.

It was announced earlier this month that Freeman Chapel CME Church on South Virginia Street would be providing a shelter through the day for Hopkinsville’s homeless who left after their overnight stay at the Salvation Army.

Mayor Dan Kemp says it was a concept that was sought after for some time, but everything fell into place this year.

The mayor says it’s a partnership between the church and Salvation Army, which will still provide lunch to the homeless as they always have.

The high temperatures will likely be in the 20’s and 30’s through the end of this workweek, much colder than the relatively warm weather the area has seen for most of the new year.
