Saturday wreck on Moores Drive sends Hopkinsville man to Vandy, results in DUI charges

A single-vehicle wreck on Moores Drive Saturday evening sent a local man to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and resulted in DUI charges.

The incident happened around 6:30 near the 500 block of Moores, according to the report from Officer Jeremy Marcum, which says 25-year old Shawn Gilkey of Hopkinsville was westbound when he lost control of his car in a curve and hit a tree.

Witnesses say they saw the driver throw beer cans before running toward Greenville Road.

The owner of the car, 38-year old Peggy Thomas, showed up soon after and identified the driver as Gilkey. She said she’d given permission to Gilkey to drive her car and told police where he could be found.

Officers soon located Gilkey and determined he had severe injuries. He consented to a blood test at Jennie Stuart Medical Center before being flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment of a fractured orbital socket. Officials at the hospital say he was treated and released.

He was cited into court for his third DUI in the last five years and on driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident charges.

Ms. Thomas was cited on charges of providing a motor vehicle to an intoxicated person and permitting an unlicensed driver to operate a vehicle.
