Local man seriously injured in Walnut St. wreck

A Hopkinsville man sustained serious injuries in a rear-end collision on Walnut Street Saturday.

The incident happened just before 4:30 near the 14th Street intersection on Walnut, according to the report from Hopkinsville Police Officer Andre Jacobs, which says a utility truck owned by AT&T was parked in the roadway where crews were working on a telephone pole.

Police say the workers had placed warning cones in the road behind the truck to alert motorists of the activity, but witnesses say 36-year old Marvin Gray, Jr. of Hopkinsville never slowed down as he approached the vehicle and ran into its rear.

Gray sustained what are described as severe head injuries and was taken first to Jennie Stuart Medical Center before being flown by Air Evac to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

A spokesperson at the Nashville Hospital says he is in critical, but stable condition. Hopkinsville Police closed Walnut Street for about 3 and a half hours to allow the scene to be reconstructed.
