Local museum to unveil African-American exhibit

Officials with the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County have announced that a new exhibit will focus on African American education in Christian County with a special spotlight on the life and contributions of Rozelle Leavell.

A Hopkinsville native and graduate of Tuskegee Institute, Leavell taught in the county's segregated school system for 42 years, retiring in 1966 when he was the principal of consolidated Gainesville Elementary School.

Officials say the exhibit features personal items and photographs from Leavell's educational career, as well as memorabilia from Attucks High School and other local African American schools.
The exhibit will be open for public viewing on Monday, January 21st in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and will remain on display through the end of February.

The Museums will be closed January 22nd through January 24th-and January 28th through January 30th for exhibit maintenance.
