MLK Day commemorations set for Todd and Christian Counties

Officials have announced plans for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day commemorations in Christian and Todd Counties.

The first event will be Saturday, January 19th when the annual “I have a Dream Too” program will be hosted at Means Avenue Baptist Church in Hopkinsville from 5 until 7pm.

The speakers will be Jovante Mohone and Keith Mahone, Jr. Anyone wanting more information on that program should call Reverend C.R. Miller or Shana McCombs at 498-9627.

First Street Baptist Church in Hopkinsville will host the annual Sunday program on January 20th at 2pm, with music to be provided by the church choir and the speaker to be Reverend Darvin Adams of Hopkinsville who now pastors Phillips Temple CME Church in Toledo, Ohio.

This year’s Todd County Martin Luther King Commemoration will be Sunday, January 20th in the Todd County High School Auditorium at 3pm. The speaker will be Jefferson Davis State Park Manager Ron Sydnor, who became the first African-American to hold that position nearly three years ago.

Music will be provided by church choirs in Todd County and the theme is “You and I Keeping the Dream Alive.”

Organizer Lisa Lewis Balboa says there will also be a banner contest sponsored by the Todd County Standard. It’s open to all children and youth groups in Todd County and winners will receive a cash reward. Anyone with questions about the Todd County activities should call Ms. Balboa at 270-954-3004.

The annual Hopkinsville-Christian County NAACP Monday commemoration march will be that Monday morning at 10am beginning at the Boys and Girls Club. The church service will be hosted at Mt. Olive Baptist Church on East 4th Street following the march. Hopkinsville native Pastor Marvin Barner, who now ministers in Evansville, will be the featured speaker.
