Coming off a deadly Christmas weekend, Kentucky State Police are reminding people to drive smart and sober during the upcoming New Year's holiday.

Troopers say eleven people were killed statewide in crashes between last Friday and Christmas Day. Three of the deadly wrecks are blamed on alcohol use. Six of the 10 victims in motor vehicles were not wearing seat belts and five people were killed in a single wreck in Knox County.

One of the fatal wrecks attributed to alcohol use happened at Crofton-Fruit Hill Road and Crofton Fire Tower Road in north Christian County early Sunday morning when a driver went through a stop sign and crashed into a tree, killing both people in the vehicle.

Through Christmas day, 729 people had been killed in wrecks on Kentucky roads this year. That was 16 more than the number from one year ago. KSP says 139 people have died in wrecks involving the use of alcohol this year alone.
