Hopkinsville Police have determined the shooting incident outside of a gun show at the fairgrounds Saturday was, indeed, an accident.

The incident happened around 1:15pm in the fairgrounds parking lot, according to the report, which says 20-year old Kyle Lauritson of Hopkinsville was attempting to load a handgun in a vehicle when it fired.

The bullet hit Lauritson in the hand, went through the seat and hit 27-year old Rory Benson of Hopkinsville in the buttocks. The men were treated at Jennie Stuart Medical Center and Lauritson’s name had been redacted on the report pending further investigation.

Public Information Officer Paul Ray now says police determined it to be purely accidental and that no charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
