City of Hopkinsville and Fort Campbell hosting Gander Memorial events

The City of Hopkinsville and Fort Campbell will be hosting memorial ceremonies next week to honor the loss of 248 Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who died during the crash of Arrow Airlines Flight 1285, in Gander, Newfoundland on December 12th, 1985.

The City of Hopkinsville will conduct an annual Wreath Laying ceremony to honor those lost in the plane crash on Wednesday, December 12th at 10 a.m. at Fort Campbell Memorial Park.

Meanwhile, the 101st Airborne Division and the 2nd Brigade Combat Team will hold its annual memorial ceremony Wednesday, December 12th at 2 p.m. at the local post.

While returning from a six-month peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, the aircraft carrying 248 Soldiers stopped to refuel and subsequently crashed upon takeoff, claiming the life of everyone aboard.

The Soldiers were from the 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment.

This year marks the 27th anniversary of the tragic event.
