HPD Sgt. charged with DUI resigns from department

The Hopkinsville Police Sergeant who was arrested on DUI charges Saturday night has resigned from his position.

Sgt. John Thopmson had been suspended with pay, pending an internal investigation into the arrest outside of the Eagles Club on Fort Campbell Boulevard Saturday night around 11:45, but Chief Guy Howie says Thompson resigned before that investigation ever began.

Sgt. Mike Marszalek is listed on the citation as the arresting officer, with the report saying Thompson was attempting to leave the parking lot of the Eagles Club when he ran over a barrier made of barrels, chains and poles. Thompson reportedly attempted to dislodge the barrels from his vehicle, but ran into grassy mound off the roadway.

Chief Howie says Thompson’s conduct wasn’t a reflection of his department, and commended the officers who were willing to arrest one of their own who they believed had committed a crime.

Thompson and his passenger went uninjured in Saturday night’s incident.
