State Senate Republicans to choose leaders Tuesday

Republicans in the state senate will meet tomorrow to choose their leaders for the upcoming session and State Senator-Elect Whitney Westerfield says he believes all of the candidates have the best interest of Kentucky in mind.

The recently elected Westerfield wouldn’t say who he is voting for when the Republican Caucus meets, but did say he’s met with all of the major players seeking a spot in leadership.

The session will begin without longtime Senate President David Williams, who accepted an appointment by Governor Steve Beshear to a judgeship in his district. Senator Robert Stivers of Manchester and Senator Bob Leeper of Paducah are two of the primary candidates to replace him.

Westerfield says Williams’ reputation across the state—deserved or not—may have sometimes been an obstacle to progress that won’t be there any longer.

Senate Republicans will also choose a floor leader and Senate president pro-tem. Incumbent president pro-tem Katie Stine is expected to keep that position unopposed.
