Ward 5 City Council candidates debate

Our series from the League of Women Voters Political forum continues as we feature the two candidates vying for the Ward 5 Hopkinsville City Council seat in today’s news.

Incumbent Charlie Henderson debated Republican challenger Jason McCraw at the Bradford Square mall, where the two men disagreed on most issues.

Asked about whether there is a need for more police officers, McCraw said he would like to see a stronger force focused on curbing Hopkinsville’s drug problem.

Councilman Henderson said he will listen to what Chief Guy Howie and that he would be open to more officers if they are needed.

McCraw said he’d look at cutting city administrative jobs to curb spending, while Henderson said there are already several people doing the jobs of two people. Henderson said he supports the smoking ban ordinance because a vast majority of his constituents he’s spoken with want it, while McCraw says he believes businesses should be allowed to make the decision on their own.

The Political Forums take a day off for church night, but will resume tomorrow night at the Bradford Square Mall.
