Fire safety encouraged during prevention week

This is National Fire Prevention Week and parents are being encouraged to teach children some simple tools that could one day save their life.

Hopkinsville Fire Marshall Cecelia Cloos says the age-old message of teaching children an escape route in the case of a house fire is still as relevant today as ever.

Ms. Cloos says something that isn’t emphasized as often as it perhaps should be is to teach smaller children how to unlock a door when they need to get outside fast.

It’s also a good time to remember to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and to be sure they are strategically placed in areas of your home where you would be awakened if a fire broke out at night.
