McCracken Co. Sheriff's Deputy forced to shoot suicidal man

Police in McCracken County had to gun down a suicidal man who brandished a weapon to police yesterday morning.

A news release from KSP says the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office received the call of a suicidal man on Oriole Lane around 11am and found 50-year old Michael Lakin brandishing a handgun in a window when they arrived.

Deputy Jared Rivera backed his cruiser out of the man’s driveway and took cover behind it. Police say Lakin then came to the front door of the residence showing a gun and a sword.

Lakin was reportedly given orders to drop the weapons, but instead advanced toward Deputy Rivera’s position. The deputy fired one shot into Lakin’s torso, causing him to retreat back to the home. Lakin was taken by ambulance to a Paducah hospital and waas listed in serious condition.

Kentucky State Police have charged Lakin with third degree assault of a police officer.
