Woman cited into court after child found walking alone near street

A 2-year old child was found wandering alone near a city street yesterday morning, with the mother located and cited into court.

Hopkinsville Police Officer Jerry Marcum responded to the Canton-West 15th Street intersection a little after 9:30 when a call was received by the ECC that the child was walking around in only a diaper.

Officer Marcum soon found the toddler, with a citizen saying the child had been chasing a dog. Police went door to door looking for a parent and found the home on West 13th Street.

Officer Marcum knocked and announced himself multiple times to no response before going into the unlocked home, according to the arrest card, which says 27-year old Melissa Davidson of Hopkinsville came out of a back room stumbling and rubbing her eyes. Davidson said the child was hers and social services was called. They released custody back to the mother, saying there was no active state investigation against her.

Davidson was cited into court on one count of endangering the welfare of a minor.
